CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE

“Mom, hurry up, the kids’ll be here soon.” Jason pounded on Lynn’s bedroom door.

“I’m coming,” she called. “Get downstairs and help Piper bring in the drinks.”

Lynn heard Jason thunder down the stairs as Piper and her boys tumbled onto the kitchen porch. Jason was sixteen today. She was glad that it was Saturday and the driver’s license testing office was closed. Otherwise he would have had her in line early this morning. She had promised him that after school Monday she would take him for his test.

“Hurry up,” came a yell from below. Lynn took one last look at her hair, then thought, what for, a dozen teenagers? She ran down stairs to see that all was ready for the big celebration. Piper was unloading cans of soft drinks and bags of chips.

“Who’s going to eat all that?” asked Lynn.

Piper looked at her, then turned to her son, Doyle. “I thought you said thirty kids.” Lynn screeched as Doyle looked for somewhere to hide.

“It’s a surprise, shh.” Doyle hoped Jason hadn’t heard Lynn’s response.

“What surprise?” whispered Lynn, not happy.

“I guess, we thought - -”

“We who?” demanded Piper. Then she turned to Lynn. “I’m sorry. I thought this was all part of your plan.”

“I guess it is now,” Lynn shrugged, as she wondered whether she had enough food. She pulled out her cell as she scanned the supplies in her pantry.

“Get over here with enough hamburgers and hot-dogs for thirty kids. And buns, too,” she told Dusty, “I just learned Jason’s friends are having a surprise party, here.” She almost screamed the last word.

Lynn closed her cell and looked around for Piper. “Did you know about this?” Lynn demanded.

“Didn’t Dusty tell you?” asked Piper. The women turned when they heard Jason come into the kitchen.

“Mom, they’ll be here at six,” Jason panicked as he surveyed the kitchen. “Shouldn’t you be cooking or something?”

“It’s all under control,” said his mother.

Way and Patti Ann came into the kitchen. “Uncle Dusty just called,” announced Way, “Come on, Jason, he needs some help.”

Jason almost fainted, “The guys will be here soon.” His vision of his sixteenth birthday seemed to be melting before his eyes.

“No, we’ll be right back.” Patti Ann grabbed his arm and pulled him toward Way’s truck.

Once the kids left the house, Lynn turned to Piper. “Dusty’s in on this? I just called him. He didn’t say anything.”

“Of course, he’s in on it. Everyone else is at rehearsal,” answered Piper as she emptied her bags of food. “Doyle, get all that ice out of the car.”

“He just acted like, well, like he was doing me a big favor.” Lynn organized some food on the kitchen island. “He even said I owed him.”

“I’m sure he did,” sniffed Piper. “Sometimes that man is exasperating. I don’t think he trusts me and Will.” Piper emptied snacks into bowls.

Lynn pulled condiments from the refrigerator. “What do you mean?”

“Well, he had Way tell Doyle about this party idea, instead of talking to me and Will.”

“He thought this up himself?” Lynn was touched by Dusty’s interest in Jason.
