Chapter 6

Serves him right!

Kristina had always abhorred violence no matter how much she was provoked, but for Anthony to insinuate she had gotten where she was today by sleeping around cut her into shreds. How dare he accuse her when he had been the one sleeping around when they were dating?

She made to turn away, but he stopped her with a strong hand on her arm. A muscle twitched in his chin, and his eyes glared fire at her. He jerked her closer, and she gasped at the sudden movement. She caught a whiff of his masculine scent of musky cologne mixed with horse flesh and hay, and it was almost her undoing. She never could resist him whenever he came this close to her.

“Don’t you ever do that again.”

“What will you do?” she snapped as she tried but failed to wriggle free from his ironclad hold. “Send your precious cowgirl Chloe to teach me some manners.”

Something indescribable entered his eyes. “I might just do that. At last she had known never to raise her hand to hit a man.”

“Yeah, that’s because both of you were more interested in other things.”

His eyes darkened. “What’s that supposed to mean?”

She ducked her head. Never would she allow him to see how much he had hurt her. If she were to bring up the kissing scene with Chloe, he would think she hadn’t let go and was still pinning away for him.

“Let me go,” she stiltedly told him when she tried to release her arm from his hold without success. Being so close to him wasn’t good for her senses.

“First apologize for pouring coffee on me yesterday and for slapping me just now.”

Kristina chewed on her bottom lip in defiance. Apologizing to him, although painful for what he did to her, would mean she would go home before the snowstorm hit. Her mom had warned her about it when she was almost out of the door. Already dressed and holding the plate of cookies her mom baked, she had decided to risk it. She knew her mom would plague her with guilt when they were snowed in if she didn’t apologize to him.

“I’m sorry for spilling coffee on you and for slapping you.”

“Say it like you mean it.”

Her eyes threw daggers at him. “Let me go. I have apologized.”

He looked as if he wanted to say something, but he shook his head and released her arm.

“Thank you,” she stiffly told him, and hurried away, feeling as if she had just finished doing battle.

“Tell me, Kristina, was it worth it at the end of the day?”

She spun around at his question. “What?”

“The fancy life you’ve been living in New York. Was it worth leaving the town you grew up in, everything you knew, and everyone you…claimed to love?”

Kristina’s hand itched to slap him again for having the effrontery to ask her such a question. She almost threw the real reason she left at him but decided it would only delay her departure.

“Yes; it was worth it and more,” she replied heatedly and walked away.
