Postscript

As I, her always loving mother, write this, twelve long years have gone by but I remember space was a problem, quickly solved by love and huge relief at her return. My sitting room became her bedroom, my sofa her bed, and similar space was found by close friends in Kensington, which helped her flat hunting. We all spent happy weeks until she found her new home in Notting Hill Gate, two minutes from Portobello Road, and she lived there happily for several years. She and I still travelled, visiting many interesting places; Florence, Venice (Harry’s Bar!), New York, Los Angeles, St. Petersburg, Prague, Morocco, Egypt, sailing down the Nile and across Lake Nasser to Abu Simbel, Cuba all spring to mind. Plus of course, Africa, her childhood home, visiting many parts of Zimbabwe, which was Rhodesia when she was a child – seeing the game reserves, the massive dam at Kariba, and the very special and magnificent Victoria Falls.

When in Europe, she saw Belsen and the immense and grim horror had a very profound effect on her which remained with her for the rest of life.

Mixed memories of joy and sadness and loss, but few regrets.

Then on her last ever journey to Annecy in France to spend time with a new interest in her life. As she had at the age of four sung I’m Leaving on a Jet Plane… this tune could very well have been her epitaph.

She has left a huge gap in all our lives, her funeral filled the Brompton Oratory, and many tears were shed. At her wake at her favourite place in Notting Hill Gate had tears, but also laughter and memories with huge pictures of her beaming down at us. A beautiful, strong, loving, courageous, feisty young woman who packed 80 years onto her 40 on this earth.

She loved all of us dearly, and hopefully is now with her father and two brothers, who pre-deceased her.

We all feel her near to us and my strong and everlasting faith allows me to end this tribute by saying, for all of us, RIP my darling Victoria, one day we must all travel this mysterious journey to be together for all eternity.

Always your loving mummy.
