CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

Trina stalked into the clearing, her words to Dwight becoming clear. “That was a total waste of time. You might enjoy tramping up and down that ridge but we could have lingered awhile and enjoyed the view. This is supposed to be a romantic getaway, or have you forgotten?”

Dwight just walked toward their saddlebags. “It was more important to get back and pitch the tent.”

“Want some help?” Trina asked. Her voice softened and she gave her hips a suggestive wiggle. “We’re all alone. Maybe I can hold something for you, something long and hard...”

Allie jerked her gaze downward, staring fixedly at the fallen spruce needles. She’d have to find a hiding spot further away, just in case they had sex before they pitched the tent. Obviously Carter and Monty weren’t anywhere close, or Janet either. Dwight would have spotted them from the ridge. So it was totally private here, just the three of them—only they didn’t know she was here.

But Dwight couldn’t be distracted. He pulled out the tent poles, his movements purposeful and efficient as he assembled the tent. It looked as if he’d have it pitched in under a minute, and Allie couldn’t help but admire his skill. Judging by Trina’s husky invitation, Dwight was good at a few other things too.

Interestingly, he didn’t brag out here nearly as much as he did at the ranch. Perhaps he was the type who needed a bigger audience although if she were his wife, she’d be a little hurt by his fixation with the tent. In her experience men never turned down sex, except possibly the fortunate few who were overwhelmed with invitations... Men like Carter.

She wondered where he and Monty were now. Did he even realize she and Janet had split up? Obviously they’d chase Janet. The capture of an Olympic gold medalist would certainly boost Carter’s creds.

Trina’s voice pulled back her attention, jarring the serene campsite. It hadn’t been so noticeable back at the ranch but the woman was rather irritating. And neither she nor Dwight had made any move to water their horses, something Allie found disturbing. She was doubly glad she’d led the animals to water. She should have grabbed that can of oysters as well; it would serve the couple right for their thoughtlessness.

When she returned home, she’d insist that Sharon implement stricter screening methods for the trail riders. Dwight might have his outfitters license but it didn’t guarantee he was responsible. When she’d ridden with Carter, he’d made sure everyone stopped and gave their horses a chance to drink. People could be judged by the way they treated their animals, and clearly neither Dwight nor Trina measured up.

Dwight had finished erecting the tent but he still made no move toward the horses. He merely yanked the hatchet from the tree, leaving a deep cut in the pale fleshy wood. “I’m going to cut some firewood now,” he said, flexing the hatchet in his hand. “Why don’t you make yourself useful and water the horses.
