My own position in Berlin had been considerably weakened and the party was clamouring for me to be brought to trial. I was to learn later that the Gestapo made plans about this time to send a plane-load of reliable SS men in plain clothes to Ankara for the purpose of kidnapping me and taking me back to Berlin. Apparently Hitler did not permit this in the end, although Ribbentrop had already signified his approval of the scheme.21

Moyzisch had been friendly with Leverkühn and was distressed that his future now ‘hung on a very thin thread indeed’. However, these events did bring Cornelia Kapp out of herself; she became passionate and vocal about traitors, confiding to him: ‘she could not understand how any German could go over to the enemy while his country was engaged in a life and death struggle’ and this type of behaviour was ‘despicable’.22

She went on to tell him about her two brothers who were officers serving at the front. Yet Moyzisch says he was never really happy with her. Was this a comment with the benefit of hindsight, for Moyzisch went to a lot of trouble to try and make her feel at home. Maybe it was out of respect for her father, Karl, although it was Von Papen who knew him and not Moyzisch:
