CHAPTER SIXTEEN

Ruth found resources within her that she did not know she had. She followed Young’s instructions, and drove as if the way was clear, when in fact, a leviathan of a truck was coming the other way. No room for two; clearly, these guys were intent on just pulverising them. All the same, if Amy said to keep going, Ruth would do exactly that, and trust her to make it possible. Even though she was not thinking about that now, everything had changed for Ruth after the first kiss they exchanged. It made her feel grounded in an entirely new way, and strong too. I like you, Ruth – a lot. Those words from Young ignited a precious warmth inside her. All these years of searching for a missing part she did not even understand ended with a deep recognition that this was it, at last. Her… Captain Young. With Amy, Ruth felt complete. She sensed nothing missing; there was nothing else she wanted. Time may as well stop. She kissed her first… And not only did Young let her, but she seemed to like that. Total surrender. You make me feel safe… Astounding, really. Ruth was more used to fixing broken people. Making them feel that kind of safe was Young’s job, a real soldier’s privilege. Or so she thought; until Amy melted into her and fell fast and sound asleep, as if having Ruth watch over her that night made her feel bulletproof. Their connection was by far the most intimate and precious thing that Ruth had experienced. She would do anything to protect it.

“Good driving,” Young shouted at her.

“Roger that!” Ruth yelled in reply. YOU BET!

She would fight for this woman, and future kisses. No Red-Eye or self-appointed alien hunter; no idiot called Beast; no one was going to stand in their way. Ruth was determined to see this through, and no matter what it may cost her.

“They’re shooting at us!” Eve screamed.

Ruth did not need a running commentary on that, she had a front row seat. One bullet hit the front guard; another glanced off the roof. A big crack appeared in the windshield. Oh, Jesus! She flicked a drop of sweat out of her eye. The monster truck was looming large now. Young started to shoot, and fortunately, she was a lot more accurate. She hit the guy armed with a rifle who stood in the cab at the back. Ruth saw him collapse. Next, she stuck two shots in the engine, and a plume of smoke came off the hood. The truck began to slow down, but it would not be enough. Still coming at us… It’s still too fast! Frozen in fear, Eve had gone blessedly quiet.

“Ames?” Ruth cried.

“Gotcha, Ruth,” Young answered in a dead-calm voice, just before she delivered her killer shot.

She nailed the driver through the truck’s windscreen, and at the last second, it finally veered off to the side and plunged into the waterlogged ditch. The track was all clear now! They kept going… They got through.
