Chapter 19
Sunlight glared through the open window, and the birds began to chirp. “Somebody please shut the curtains,” I muttered.
I opened my eyes and tried to make out the details of where I was, because I certainly wasn’t in my own bedroom. I was relieved to find that I was still fully dressed, as fully as one could be in such a skimpy black frock.
Gosh, I musta passed out. I haven’t drank like that in...wait. I’ve never drank like that. I felt like shit. My head was pounding, and I wanted to go home to catch some real shut-eye and get over my hangover before my girls got back.
Suddenly, another big question plagued me: Did I sleep with Foster? Damn it. Just my luck. I finally get to sleep with the guy, and I don’t remember a damn thing.
It was way to bright, so I climbed out of bed and reached for a pair of sunglasses that were lying on the dresser. With the borrowed shades on, I walked to the bathroom. I splashed cold water on my face and dried it off with a thick towel. I lifted the dark lenses and saw that my eyes were bloodshot, my mascara and eyeliner smeared all over the place, like I’d called Mike Tyson a sissy one too many times. On top of that, my hair was a hot mess, something like road kill that stuck its paw in a light socket.
Eager to get out of there as discreetly as possible, I slowly walked down the stairs, only to be greeted by prettiest blue eyes in the world. I bit my lip hard, desperately trying to remember, but not even one recollection of the night before flickered in my mind.
As I stood there, feeling stupid, it suddenly dawned on me that I was still wearing his sunglasses. I tried to take them off but it was way too bright.
“Keep ‘em,” he said.
“Thanks. I’ll give them back, I promise.” I glanced down and fumbled for words. “Um, did, we, uh... What happened exactly?”
“You don’t remember?” he asked.
“It’s all kinda fuzzy. If you could fill in the details... See, I don’t usually do this sort of thing.”
“What’s the matter, little minx? Are you worried we played on the wild side?” he teased.
I slapped my forehead, completely mortified. “Oh no. Please don’t tell me I said anything that lame.” I blew out a long breath. “Listen, I’ve gotta go. I feel like an idiot. I drank so much, and I have no idea what I said or what we did or... I can’t even remember if we had sex. If we did, I guess I missed out on the greatest night of my life.”
“You didn’t miss anything,” he assured me. “You passed out in the truck before we even got home. I carried you to my bed and took only your shoes off. I slept down here, on the couch.”
“I’m so sorry about all this, Foster. I’m going through a hard time in my life, and I’m not really much of a drinker.
