Chapter Nine

In-laws and Outlaws

Dinner at Giovanni's was wonderful, and Lee didn't even feel overly peculiar as he

walked home from Joey's that night. It was late for Lee, close to midnight, but as he'd

slept in he was reasonably sure he could work for an hour or so before going to bed if he

really tried. Of course, sleeping in because one had spent the night carousing wasn't quite

the same thing as sleeping in to rest, and he was convinced he'd have trouble

concentrating, anyway.

After dinner they'd gone back to Joey's house, talking animatedly about books that had

been made into movies and dissing all the movie versions. There were two notable

exceptions: Dangerous Liaisons and The Secret Life of Bees had both been deemed

worthy. Joey had been horrified to discover that Lee had never actually seen The Princess

Bride, and that particular discussion had taken up about fifteen minutes and only ended

when Lee had kissed him to shut him up.

After that, there had been a lot more kissing and a lot less talking.

Concentrating on political theory didn't seem to be playing a big part in Lee's weekend,

and that was causing him some worry. He had more work to do, a draft to finish, and

appendices to complete. He couldn't actually afford, academically speaking, to be

distracted by a romantic or physical relationship. Both together could be disastrous.

He could almost hear Matt lecturing him about being ridiculous and gloomy and putting

the cart before the horse. And he could hear himself pointing out to Matt that the sheer

number of orgasms he'd had in slightly over twenty-eight hours had sapped him of mental

powers to a frightening degree. After that, the mental argument grew circular.

When Lee walked into his house, he wasn't very surprised to find the message light on his

phone flashing at him cheerfully. He'd talked to Matt earlier in the day for half an hour

or so and had been convinced to call Tony. Of course, between time zones and the

weekend there hadn't been an answer at Tony's number, and Lee hadn't wanted to just

hang up. So he'd left a stammering message that was probably bad enough to send Tony

into a panic. He'd made sure that both Matt and Tony's numbers were programmed into

his cell phone and had done his very best to forget about how dumb he'd sounded on

Tony's machine.

Lee pushed the button on his answering machine and listened to three messages in a row

of Tony telling him to call anytime he wanted, day or night, that he'd pick up. After that

was a detailed list of the things Tony would be doing at home, the implication being both

that Lee could call and Tony would for sure be there and not asleep, and that Tony would

really appreciate if Lee would just phone and save him from having to actually do all the

chores he was listing off. Each message also included a reminder that Tony was a night

owl.

"Here we go again." Lee went to the fridge and got himself a bottle of water, pointedly

ignoring the one beer they'd managed to overlook in their overindulgence the night before

and then called Joey.
