Chapter Six

Nico stared out the window, not focused on his reflection in the glass—but watching the heavy sheets of rain. The occasional flashes of lightning washed everything in an eerie gray light followed by a low rumble that made Nico think of the sounds Jet made when he was coming. Distracting, to say the least—and one reason he had gone ahead and made reservations at a vampire-safe establishment. Just in case that distraction got to be too much.

Jet gripped the wheel in an overhand grip, his fingers dancing to the beat of a song only he could hear. They had been silent since the SUV passed out of Louisiana, through Mississippi, and now into Alabama. At first the quiet had been restful, but with each passing mile, it became clear Jet had something on his mind and was working hard at keeping his thoughts private.

Only fitting, Nico supposed, since there were things he did not want to share, either.

Like orders to kill.

When the big vehicle slowed and drifted right to take the exit, Nico was surprised to realize they had passed into Florida several miles back.

“How close are we?” Nico asked.

Jet laughed. “I never figured you for the are-we-there-yet type.” He shook his head and raised both hands to the wheel as they traversed the flooded underpass. “Yeah, almost—provided we don’t float away.” He paused. “Why did you ride along? Couldn’t you have misted this far? Instead of driving, I mean.”

“No, not this far to an unknown location. As convenient as it is to be able to mist here and there throughout a region, for long distances, we must use more traditional modes of transportation. There is also the added element of misting into danger if you go someplace you have not previously inspected. That is where the myth that vampires must be invited inside came from, though. As a general rule, vampires mist more easily to locations they have been welcomed in the past, particularly places you have left a mark.”

“Laurant says your scent is all over my place, like a tomcat marking his territory.”

“The sex demon is perceptive,” Nico said with a smile.

Jet’s knuckles tightened on the wheel, but he did not respond to the jest, leaving Nico to wonder if something had changed between them over the daylight hours. Rather than ask, he decided to let the mood play out until after they accomplished the interview with Jedediah’s mother. There was no telling what the emotional fallout might be.

With the silence once again heavy between them, they continued along a two-lane highway draped in heavy foliage and bracketed by overflowing drainage ditches. In the darkness, a pale blue and yellow glow in the distance became a sign for Serenity Oaks Trailer Court. The SUV slowed and rocked from side-to-side as they splashed into the drive. The single security light at the entrance did not provide any direction, but Jet seemed to know right where he was going. He took a left, then a right, before pulling to a stop in front of a silver bullet-shaped trailer that would have looked old thirty years ago.
