CHAPTER 22

KHLOE

An hour later we were finally in the kitchen, making that dinner we’d promised ourselves—and discussing everything from the state of life to the state of his country as we chopped, diced, mixed, sautéed—and took only the occasional break to stop and spend some time kissing.

At one point, I ended up on top of a counter, Rémy standing between my legs and pulling me against him as I buried my hands in his hair, holding him still so I could kiss him as deeply as I wanted to.

But we tried to keep those episodes to a minimum. After all, it wasn’t a good idea to get too distracted while you were actually cooking.

“What exactly are we making?” I asked, slicing through the three yellow squashes Rémy had handed me when we first got into the kitchen.

“Whatever we make,” he said, laughing. “The housekeeper left us with vegetables galore and little else besides some chicken. My plan is to slice everything, put it into a frying pan, and fry it with olive oil and white wine and garlic until it looks done. Unless you have a better plan.”

I grinned at him from across the island, watching as he deftly sliced the seeds out of a bell pepper. The man was a wonder of both organization and free-spiritedness, and though three days ago I would have said that I could never have handled that combination, now that it was right in front of me, I was finding it…

Charming beyond anything I’d ever even imagined. And addictive in a way I hadn’t seen coming.

“No, I don’t have a better plan. That sounds great. But you’d think they could have at least left us some croissants,” I observed.

He leaned over and tapped the tip of my nose with his finger. “They did. But those are for breakfast.”

I laughed, too happy to do anything else, and went back to slicing. And before long, Rémy was telling me more about the house. More about his family, and how they’d been the royals in this country for too many years to count. How they’d helped hide refugees during World War II, and how they’d managed to keep themselves out of World War I entirely, just by careful negotiations and a firm commitment to staying completely neutral.

“We’ve led this country for years, and my mother and father will never want to give it up,” he said, sliding the sliced bell pepper, squash, onions, garlic, and a number of tomatoes and potatoes into the skillet, then placing the chicken breasts in as well and coating the whole mess liberally with olive oil.

“They will think that it’s their responsibility to stay and continue to fight for their people,” Rémy said. “If we’re going to get to them to see that the people will do better with a different form of government, we need to find a way to keep them involved in that government. Otherwise they’ll feel that they’re neglecting their duty, and the people will feel as if they’ve been abandoned.
