CHAPTER SIXTEEN

Crystal wanted to stay furious. She told herself that she would have liked to know all this stuff before she signed up for the job. If she had, she would not have agreed to work for Christensen. You know that’s not true… Crystal blew an impatient exhale. In truth, she had been drawn to her from the word go. Knowing that there was a lot more to her campaign than Abigail let on officially also made her curious. She looked at her, aware that leaving had never even been an option.

“Yes,” she nodded. “I’m okay. We’re fine.”

“And you’re happy to stay on as my CPO?”

Abigail looked worried, incredibly anxious. Crystal flashed her a reassuring smile, just the right side of cocky.

“Despite the enormity of the challenge, and the insanity of your mission,” she replied. “The answer is yes, Ms Christensen. I’ll have one hell of a good crack at it.”

Abigail touched her hand.

“Thank you,” she murmured.

They both jumped as the lights suddenly came back on, and someone knocked softly on the door.

“It’s me, and Tom,” Russell announced.

Crystal opened the door. He glanced at her as he came in.

“See,” he remarked with a knowing grin. “I’m learning.”

“Good man,” Crystal approved, smiling back.

“All good, Crys, no worries. I’m on watch until midnight, then he’ll be on.” He cracked a wry smile. “It’s all kicking off, uh? Should have known this job would be fun, since you were involved.”

“Yeah,” Crystal shrugged. “I guess so, hey.”

“Jokes aside,” Greer added in a lower tone. “We realise the seriousness of the mission, and everything that is truly at stake here. We’ve got their backs. And yours as well, Thor.”

“Roger that,” Crystal approved. “Thanks, as always.”

“Sure thing. See you later.”

As Greer left, Abigail beckoned her over.

“Crys? Do you have a minute?”

She looked solemn and determined, her face grave yet calm. Now this, Crystal reflected, is what a Commander-in-Chief should look like… Her mind was still reeling from Abigail’s revelations. She had questions, lots of them, and one in particular had her tongue on fire. But Abigail spoke first, in a clear and decisive voice.

“Here’s the schedule for tomorrow,” she announced.

Crystal swallowed back her impatience.

“I’m listening,” she nodded.

“I’ll be doing a series of interviews at the local News station in the morning. We’ve got two town halls in the afternoon, and a meet-and-greet at a Farmers’ Market to follow. Once we’re done with that, we’ll be driving on to Waterloo in the evening.”

Crystal suppressed a frustrated sigh. Abigail already knew what she thought of those open and close interactions with the public. It would be so easy for a killer to infiltrate the
