Even Matt couldn’t win against a bullet. The image of him being shot and killed flashed across her mind, and a tremor flowed over her as her insides quivered. She couldn’t lose him. In just the short time she’d known him, he’d made a home in her heart.

That knowledge freaked her out.

Casey groaned and let her head drop back with a thud against the wall, closing her eyes. How in the hell had that happened? It had to be a by-product of the intense situation.

She couldn’t be in love with him?

Her eyes flew open and she gasped when a hand cupped her cheek. “Hey, sweetness, you doing okay over here?” Matt’s gaze was filled with concern as he knelt beside her.

His muscular frame blocked the other men from her sight. His warm chocolate eyes caressed her. Her breath caught and her womb clenched, her breasts tingling with need. Even in the middle of this hell, she wanted him.

He was the sexiest man she’d ever known. His greatest strength wasn’t his size, though. It was his strength of character. A protector, who fought to keep his country safe, and who, she had no doubt, would keep her safe as well.

Casey barely refrained from throwing herself into his arms, needing the comfort waiting for her there. Instead, she took a calming breath. She couldn’t mess this up, and possibly get them both killed. “I’m fine,” she assured him with a smile, “just a little freaked is all.”

Although he didn’t kiss her, Casey could see the desire in his scorching gaze. His lips thinned and a muscle along the side of his jaw ticked before he spoke.
