Chapter Eleven

The next two weeks went by slowly. I found myself doing what Raven did, avoiding anywhere that Heather, Amber, or the guys could trap me. While the teachers weren’t much help, the taunting seemed to be less in class, with an audience.

The Elite guys seemed to have lost interest in me. Apart from the occasional glance from one of them, or a wink from Brad, they didn’t talk to me and stayed away. Even in Biology, Forrest and Kip paid attention to the teacher, rather than me. It was nice, but I felt like a storm was brewing. There was no way things could be this way forever.

My locker regularly had new graffiti on it and it was my new daily task to scrub off assorted slurs. Fortunately, they didn’t try putting up another photo.

Alex seemed to be oblivious to all that was going on. His classes were going well and he was always surrounded by friends. It made my heart happy to see him doing so well. Now that he had good food on a regular basis, he was filling out, too. His skinny legs had some meat on them and when he hugged me goodnight at his dorm, I could feel his ribs were buried under a layer of fat now. I could put up with just about anything if he was happy and thriving.
