DRESSED IN A summer-blue cocktail dress, Heather felt all eyes on her as she walked down the carpeted aisle in the mid-afternoon sunlight. Behind her, the other bridesmaids wore the same color, but in a style of dress that suited each of them best. A string quartet played inside the gazebo, where white bunting had been strung along the railings. Flowers festooned the gazebo, and were also attached to each white folding chair that lined the white-carpet aisle.

And standing beside the gazebo stairs, the groom looked handsome in his suit, along with each of his ushers. Nate Thalberg gave the appearance of a man who was about to have everything he wanted in life: a lover, a partner, a wife. He smiled at Heather, and she smiled back, lips trembling. Next she glanced at Chris, and his blue eyes looked at her so warmly that she knew she was reddening as she lowered her gaze back to the carpet. She could almost feel him kissing her, touching her, but banished the memories so she wouldn’t trip on her way up the aisle.

As she took her place opposite the ushers, she turned to watch each of the bridesmaids make their own way toward her, carrying casual bouquets of daisies: Brooke Thalberg, sister of the groom, and Monica Shaw, good friend of the bride. Heck, Brooke was the bride’s friend, too. Heather knew that both women had welcomed Emily to Valentine, befriended her, helped her in her quest to find her lost family and a home. Emily’s teenage sister Steph came last, and the girl’s eyes glistened with tears even as she smiled proudly to everyone she knew. A ripple of chuckles moved through the crowd as one by one, people saw the cowboy boots Steph sported proudly.

Heather imagined Emily, hidden within a white tent, was having a hard time holding back her own tears, since she’d discovered her true family only a year ago, and now they were all in her wedding. It was what Emily had wanted, a real family.

When she emerged from the tent on the arm of her dad, Joe Sweet, he beamed down at her with all the love a father could bestow. Nate straightened his shoulders resolutely, wearing a look of pride and love. The crowd gasped at the sight of the bride and rose as one, as the string quartet broke into a very interesting but recognizable version of “At Last.”

Heather exchanged teary smiles with the other three bridesmaids. In her mind, she sang the next line of the lyric, My love has come along . . . and it took everything in her not to glance at Chris. Could he be her love? Did it happen that fast, with just one look at each other? How was she supposed to know—to trust in happily-ever-afters? She’d been so certain she’d had that once before.
