HUNCHED OVER HER WHEEL, Lark tried for the third time to form an elongated vase. She shouldn’t have told Heather about the Bellissimo offer. Once her aunt had got the idea in her head, she’d insisted on doing everything in her power to make sure Lark made it happen.

She’d offered to work half of Lark’s shifts at The Magic Beans. She’d come up with a dozen different promotional ideas, all aimed at bringing in more money. And, unfortunately, she’d developed a brilliant talent for nagging.

Once upon a time, Lark had loved nothing more than spending time alone, just her and her clay. But now it was simply too much. Working in the coffeehouse was draining. Between the still-unfamiliar work, the early hours and the stress from dealing with people all day, every day, Lark had missed her pottery time.

But not anymore. Up here, it was just her, the clay and her thoughts.

And all she could think of was Shane.

Sexy, gorgeous, fun, sweet Shane with his quiet voice and his incredible body.

It’d been five days and she missed him so much, and she hated that she did. She should be angry, as she’d been when Eric had cheated on her, and then ditched her. She should be numb, as she’d been after she’d lost her mom. Instead, she was hyperalert, all of her senses focused on Shane as if they were waiting for him to walk into the room.

She’d spent hours on the internet after Sara’s bombshell, reading anything she could find on the navy SEALs. She’d watched two movies, read four books and hyperventilated three times thinking of what he did for a living. But even as she’d freaked out about it, so many things had slipped into place.

That body—oh, that body—was military made. He was in such good shape that he hadn’t got winded, even during their wildest sexy times.

His demeanor. He projected a cool, controlled strength. Even during the stressed-out drama at his mother’s house, he’d remained composed and calm.

And, of course, his reticence. From everything she’d read and seen, almost everything he did was secret. His entire career was top secret. To say nothing of the fact that from what she’d read, SEALs traveled all over the world, were gone a lot of the time and lived in danger.

It’d be crazy to think she could have a relationship with a guy like that. Especially when the guy had left her with just a freaking note.

Still...

Running her knuckles inside the vessel, she slowly pressed outward, widening the bowl as images of Shane flashed through her mind.

His smile. His laugh. The curve of his back where it met that sweet ass. And the note he’d left on her pillow.

Just before he left her.

Her thumb dug into the clay, leaving an ugly gouge in the neck of the vase. Clenching her teeth against the frustration, Lark tried to smooth it out. But instead of smoothing, the clay folded, the walls collapsing on themselves. She tried to reform them, her fingers carefully pulling the pieces apart so as not to break them.
