Leo blinked at the unfamiliar surroundings in the morning light. Annabelle was breathing softly next to him, and a wide smile split his face in two at the thought of the previous night.

It had been like when they first met yet better somehow. He’d been so nervous the first time with her. She was this gorgeous, free spirit that he’d wanted so desperately to make his. And now she was even more beautiful and actually his.

His phone buzzed from the side table and he picked it up automatically. He never let it ring more than once if he could help it. If it was anything official, they got a little panicked when they thought he was unresponsive. Even for text messages, they expected a response within a few minutes or they’d break down the door.

He groaned, however, when he saw it was his father. He unlocked it to read his full message.

For once, she actually did something right. Be sure it continues. Polls are still showing voters favor independence.

Leo pursed his lips, deciding not to reply other than a simple ok, got it.

What were his options here? He could tell Annabelle about the threat from his father, but she already knew how important this trip was. And she was already so anxious and nervous about the press and supporting him. How would he even bring that up?

“Oh, by the way, my father says if Aclana doesn’t stay in Prynesse, we’ll be getting a divorce.”

Yes, that’s exactly the kind of sweet nothings she should be woken up with.

She sighed a little in her sleep, and Leo turned to look at her peaceful face.

Maybe he didn’t have to say anything. Annabelle really had done well the previous evening. She had been totally in her element at the dinner. She always did well at events, actually speaking and interacting with people, rather than standing in front of the cameras smiling. Something about all the eyes on her, and the flashing lights, made her nervous. She had tried to explain it to him after their very first press event after the engagement, but he didn’t really understand. He was so used to it he hardly noticed them anymore.

He’d tried to keep her out of the public eye as much as possible over the years; especially during the pregnancies. He knew this was a hard life to adjust to, and he had given her time to get her bearings. But that couldn’t continue, not if she was going to be the kind of queen he needed. As much as he hated his father for saying it, he was right about that.
