Chapter Nine

Dinner was a bit grim, to be honest. Our minds were not on the cuisine or the vintage, whatever it was. Once or twice I thought about giving a fuller account of what I’d seen, or thought I’d seen, in the square that afternoon. Anything, almost anything, to put some excitement back into the atmosphere.

Even Diane was in a slump. She smiled and virtually pleaded with Georgie whenever she wanted anything replenished, not her usual way at all of communicating with men she found attractive. Normally it was an icy remark or two and a purposeful lack of eye contact.

“Makes them try harder,” she’d said once, in response to a reprimand from Greta about “seeming a little rude.” It sounded like an attitude she’d picked up from her early days as a neophyte, although it had more of Reynard’s cunning about it than the impulsive nature of Klara, Diane’s primary mentor.

“If I can just find Helen,” Emilio said as we re-hashed the events of the day over a final course of sorbet and fresh fruit. “That’s the key. She must have left those phone messages for a reason. Something must be wrong, and the chances are your friends are somehow touched by it too.”

“Well, tomorrow let’s have a look at the family mansion,” Roderick said. “Have we learned any more about her parents?”

“Just those parties they’re known for,” Emilio said, “and that’s mostly speculation. Supposedly a bunch of guests in costume or masks acting bizarre. Locals won’t really talk about it.”
