Garen normally didnât lose his temper. In fact, losing his temper was such a rare occurrence that he could count on one hand how many times it had happened in his life.
So it said something that Nico had pushed him far enough to start yelling.
Shit, shit, shit. This wasnât helping anything. Nico was on the defensive, not listening, and yelling right back. Garen wanted to shake sense into him.
He also realized their argument right now wasnât why he wanted to put his hands on Nico. Even he wasnât that dense. Garen took a step back, actively breathing calm and deep, trying to regain his temper. The sexual tension between them kept his feelings ramped up, which didnât help.
Garen might have let it go, if it was obvious Nico had moved on. It had taken precisely ten minutes around him to realize that wasnât the case. Nico was still very hands-on with Garen, still gave him that teasing little grin only Garen saw. He very much acted like when theyâd been together.
Nico hadnât moved on.
Neither had Garen.
It was about time they stopped acting like theyâd broken up when absolutely nothing had changed.
Nico eyed him warily. âI donât like that look on your face. Look, Iâm trying, okay?â
âI know you are. Iâm sorry for yelling. I just realized Iâm only partially yelling at you because Iâm frustrated all around. Nico, can we just admit that we never really broke up?â
Nicoâs head snapped back, jaw dropping. âUh, yes, we did.â
âNo, we didnât. We said the words. Thatâs about all that changed. We still Skyped and talked to each other whenever we had a chance. We still tried to see each other when our insane schedules allowed for it. About the only thing that really changed is we stopped sleeping together. Will you please admit nothing changed so we can stop dancing around each other like this?â
Nico shook his head violently. âEverything changed,â he rasped, eyes on the grass. âEverything. Iâm Belâs now.â
That was not the blow or the rejection Nico obviously thought it would be. Garenâs feelings for Bel were still kindling, but he recognized he was half in love with that sassy, brilliant little blond. Given the chance, given even a little encouragement, heâd fall easily.
Garen knew before he even opened his mouth that Nico was already in love with Bel and struggling with it. Nico wasnât making a move for some damn reason, and Garen suspected he was the reason. Someone had to clear the air, and it seemed to fall to him.
âNicoââ
âNo, dammit. Iâm not rehashing this with you. No.â Nico turned on his heel and stormed out of the yard, through the back gate.
Seconds later, Garen heard the tell-tale sound of Nico running along the sidewalk.
He let his head drop back on his shoulders and blew out a breath. Well, shit. That could have gone better. He probably hadnât started out right. What heâd been trying to convey was that their feelings hadnât changed for each other, but there was still room for Bel.
