CHAPTER TWELVE
RAVEN
I collapsed on the snow at the bottom of the terrain park, my heart pounding and my body sweaty.
Crewâs board slid to a stop beside mine and then he dropped too, both of us panting.
âI win.â
He chuckled. âI let you win.â
âLies.â I smiled, staring up at the blue sky as the cold seeped through my clothes. My body was sticky with sweat. Beneath my helmet, my hair was smashed to my head. It was the best Iâd felt in, well . . . three days. Since my last night in Crewâs bed.
Iâd tried my hardest since Saturday to put him out of my thoughts. Except my efforts had been futile. Iâd looked for him almost constantly, scanning the lift lines and base area for his brown hair and sexy smile.
On Sunday, Iâd spotted him in the lodge, in line to get lunch. Iâd ducked out of sight before he could spot me, then hidden in my office for the rest of the day. Yesterday, it had been my day off, so Iâd stayed home, moping because heâd left Penny Ridgeâor so Iâd thought.
Then this morning, Iâd come to the mountain to spend the day on the slopes. My plan had been to get back to normal, and on my days off, normal meant my feet were strapped to a board. But as Iâd pulled into the parking lot, Iâd spotted Marianne climbing into an army-green G-Wagon with Utah plates.
Iâd waited, watching to see if Crew came out. My heart had been in my throat when Iâd realized heâd stayed longer than expected. But sheâd driven off alone. So Iâd taken a lift and ridden straight to the halfpipe.
Waiting. Knowing heâd find me.
When heâd shown up earlier, Iâd been torn between crying because it was so good to see him. And crying because of my epic weakness.
This was Thayer all over again.
It was going to fucking hurt.
Weâd ridden hard, barely stopping. Crew challenged me in the best possible way, pushing me to try new things and hone existing techniques. And Iâd pushed myself too, not wanting him to hold back on my account.
He was wild on that board. It was incredible to witness.
Today had been the best snowboarding of my life.
âThat was fun,â I told him. âThanks for letting me tag along.â
âTag along?â He sat up, staring down at me. âI think thatâs the other way around. Do you always go that hard?â
No. Yes. âI donât get to do this every day. So when I do, I make it count.â
âWhenâs your next competition?â
âI havenât signed up for any this season yet,â I said. âIn February, Burton is hosting an open in Vail. I was thinking about registering.â
âDo it. Burton puts on good events and youâll have solid competition. Place well and youâll get a ton of exposure and invites to the bigger events.â
I shrugged. âWeâll see.â
âWhatâs holding you back? Is it River?â
âNo, not really.â I sat up too. âRiver wonât like it but thatâs his problem. Honestly, I canât really even explain why Iâm hesitant.
