CHAPTER SEVEN

The apartment was dark, and Kyla flipped on the foyer light as she entered. Jake followed behind her, closing the door and locking it with a loud snick. She barely heard it over the pounding of her heart, and she silently willed herself to calm down.

She led the way into the small living room, which Vanessa had furnished with a black leather sofa, matching chair, and glass occasional tables. A cream-colored rug patterned with big black blocks covered the hardwood floors.

After dropping her bag beside the sofa, she switched on the sculpted metal lamps, illuminating the stark white walls. She turned to face Jake, who stood just inside the room, his hands in the front pockets of his dark-washed Rileys. His gaze swept the room before landing on her.

“This room is—”

“Cold,” she interjected. “Lifeless. Boring.”

“Nothing like where I imagined you would live,” he finished.

She smiled. “So you don’t think I’m cold, lifeless, or boring?”

His lips twitched. “No, those aren’t the adjectives I’d use to describe you.”

She really wanted to know which adjectives he’d use. At the same time, she was afraid to ask. Instead, she said, “I moved in with my sister when I got the job at Riley O’Brien & Co. I had nothing to do with the décor.”

“You and your sister must not be anything alike.”

“This apartment isn’t her, either. It’s just the person she’s trying to be.”

His eyes narrowed. “Is she going to be home soon?”

Vanessa had sent a text earlier today letting Kyla know that she planned to go directly to Alan’s house after work. He rarely came here.

“No, she’s spending the weekend with her boyfriend.”

He didn’t reply, and after an awkward moment, she remembered her manners enough to ask, “Would you like a drink? Beer? Wine?”

He shook his head before walking toward her. When he stood in front of her, he caught a loose strand of her hair and rubbed it between his thumb and forefinger. “You have no idea how many times I’ve imagined being here … alone with you…” He stared down at her, his gaze trailing over her face. “I have wanted you every minute of every day since we first met.”

“You have?” she asked, her voice shaded with disbelief.

He nodded solemnly. “Every minute of every day.”

She had suffered for months, believing that he wasn’t interested. She had almost killed herself trying to remain professional, and now she didn’t have to. She could just…

She threw herself at him. Literally threw herself at him.

As her body slammed into his, she wrapped her arms around his neck. He staggered backward with a loud grunt, his arms locked around her waist. His knees caught the edge of the sofa, and he fell onto the leather cushions, taking her with him.

Before she could blink, he rolled her under him and covered her mouth with his. Sensation bombarded her—the heavy weight of his body, the hard press of his erection, the soft brush of his lips.

This kiss wasn’t as wild as their first one. He seemed more in control, lightly sucking on her lower lip before dusting little kisses over her face.
