JB slammed onto the hard floor, his breath whooshing out of his lungs with the impact and his guitar case clattered to the floor.

An odd combination of lavender and roses filled the air.

"We are so fucked," he heard Raine whisper beside him.

"Are you all right?" Wrin stood over them with worried eyes.

He didn't get a chance to respond before Wrin leaned down and helped JB to his feet.

"Thanks." Rolling his neck on his shoulders to get out the kinks, JB took stock of his body. His head throbbed and he sported a few new bruises, only marginally battered.

Turning back to Raine, JB held out his hand and helped him up. JB rubbed his head where it had made contact with the marble.

"Are you all right?" he asked.

Raine flashed him a reassuring smile and brushed a featherlight kiss across JB's cheek, like a butterfly landing.

"I'm fine, baby, but we might have a problem."

"The goddess has decided it's time for you to return and rule your people," Raine's mother announced in what JB decided must be her queenly tone. Her voice, warm and friendly before, had turned as hard and crisp as a winter frost.

"We can't return?" JB clutched Raine's wrist. "We have to! My mama is expecting me for dinner next week, and Buster is all alone."

"Your mother is insane, love, she wouldn't notice if you didn't make it for dinner."

JB crossed his arms. Sure, she had Alzheimer's, but he still liked to see her. "What about Buster? I'm not leaving my dog."

"We might be able to send you back with another, JB," the queen said. Her expression softened when she turned to him. "Since you've lived so long with my son, you would need to have someone touch you every three days or so, but I can arrange that for you if you'd like."

"What about Raine?"

The queen shook her head. "He has to stay. He needs to take his place on the throne." She didn't look any happier about the situation than Raine.

JB blinked back tears. If it came down to a choice between Raine and his dog, he would choose his lover, but the thought of his poor defenseless pet starving alone in their apartment broke his heart. He rubbed at the ache in his chest.

"Fuck, I'll go get him," Wrin said.

There was a flash of light and the man disappeared. Before JB had a chance to say anything, Wrin reappeared carrying JB's dog.

"Buster!" JB rushed over to Wrin.

Buster gave a happy bark when JB snatched his dog from Wrin's arms.

"Thank you, thank you." He gave Wrin a smile as Buster enthusiastically licked JB's cheeks, chin, whatever he could reach.

Raine's hand clamped onto JB's shoulder, a reassuring weight. "I appreciate that, Wrin. He loves that damn dog."

"He's a good boy, yes he is." JB turned to Wrin. "How did you get him so fast?"

"Time works differently down here. Trust me, it took me much longer to coax your mutt to come with me than it seemed."

"I'll not have a dog dirtying up my palace.
