Chapter 18

Silas

Silas’s eyes slowly opened. He looked up at the dark, water-stained ceiling, the rings of brown stain a different shade of light blue than the rest of the rough stucco above his head.

There was a reason he was waking up in the middle of the night, and it was nothing new. Several times when he was supposed to be fast asleep, his eyes would open, and an anxiousness would pierce his heart like a spear and fill it full of panic. It would claim him with such ferocity, desperate tears would sting his eyes and his pulse would shoot high enough to reach the fog-covered stars he could see from the window behind his head.

And when this happened, Silas would do the same thing every time.

Silas turned his head, and breathed a sigh of relief when he saw who was sleeping next to him. It wasn’t enough though, the king rolled onto his side, propped his upper half up with his shoulder and looked down at the man who had a different body, but such a familiar face.

Sky Fallon.

His Sky.

The icy-blue eyes had been replaced with steely-grey, the straight black hair with dark brown curls. His face showed little of the man this body had been cloned from, square chin instead of pointed, eyes slightly farther apart and below arched eyebrows. But he was perfect, every part of him was perfect.

There were things that remained the same too. His ears, his little nose, where his jawline was. His hands were also the same, his walk, and below the belt, it was almost identical.

He was here, but in the depths of night… Silas would wake up believing that it had all been a dream. He’d wake up thinking that it hadn’t happened, Sky was still dead and Silas was alone, still wanting badly for the pain to end.

Silas raised a hand and gently drew his fingers over Sky’s several days of dark stubble. He smiled when Sky’s nose twitched, then, not wanting to wake him, he snuggled up next to his boyfriend and rested his forehead against the side of Sky’s head.

“Mm, what is it, sweetcakes?” Sky mumbled, a small act that had Silas’s heart soring. There may be differences now, but his voice… Oh, his gravelly voice with the rasp like he’d screamed too much as a child, that was still the same.

“Nothing, baby, go back to sleep,” Silas whispered. “Sorry I woke you.”

Sky rubbed his head against Silas’s affectionately. “You still think I’m going to disappear, don’t you?”

Silas raised a hand and rested it against Sky’s chest, if for no other reason than to feel his heartbeat.

A heartbeat that will never truly stop. Never again…

Never again. Please. Please. Never again.

“Siley.” Sky shifted over onto his side and smiled. “I’m never going away.”

To Silas’s embarrassment, Sky’s words had him immediately needing to blink back tears. “It was… really hard while you were gone,” he whispered. “And your O.L.S… it was created before you… right before you…”

“Shh.” Sky raised a hand and put a finger to Silas’s lips, then he drew it back and kissed them.
