Chapter 13

Green Soul

"Clear the kitchen table," Linda said as Jack entered the house with Kyle bleeding in his arms.

Gillian rushed into the kitchen to help, but Pops, his face crunched in a fuming ball, huffed and swiped his arm across the table. As the plastic dishes clattered on the floor, he stepped back and gestured to the clear table. Gillian did not meet his eyes.

Jack gently placed Kyle down, and then turned to Gillian. "Time for me to go. Whistle if you need me." He vanished leaving behind an unhelpful puff of smoke.

In the harsh silence, Gillian waited as Linda hovered over Kyle. She had a small first aid kit and inspected his body as if she knew what she was doing. Gillian had her doubts. Linda was no doctor, and a first aid kit had no chance of handling all of Kyle's blood and bruising.

"Shouldn't we take him to a hospital?" she asked. Her stomach knotted as she saw the degree of damage Kyle had taken. She couldn't see how he was still alive — and that knotted her heart.

Pops spun on her. "What the hell were you thinking? You put everybody's life at risk. Why? What would make you do such a stupid, stupid thing?"

Gillian had been asking the same questions all the way home. She cringed whenever Kyle moaned. She wanted to go back in time and change her decisions, but hearing the accusations from Pops broke the seal on her anger. She had endured too much and needed a punching bag — Pops provided. Like a banshee, she screamed. "How dare you! Maybe if I had been told the truth from the start, given some opportunity to make a decision, maybe then you'd have the right to tell me how stupid I've been."

"I've protected you."

"Well, look at us now. You've done a real great job."

"Don't you try to blame what happened to Kyle on me."

"If I had some training like he had, I would've been able to help him." Gillian's rage blotted out all else, and she let herself be swept away in its power. It felt good to yell, good to purge all the boiling pressure. It let her avoid worrying about Kyle. "Maybe he wouldn't even be here because I wouldn't have needed his help at all. Maybe, just maybe, I'd have been truly protected because I could have taken care of myself."

Pops slammed his hand on the counter, rattling the glasses in the sink. "Fine. It's all my fault. I screwed it all up and now everybody's at risk because of me. Does that make you feel better?"

"At least it's the truth," Gillian said. She couldn't believe the power bursting out of her. Never had she thought to challenge Pops like this, but she couldn't stop.

"You want to hear real, cold truth? Is that it?"

"It'd be nice, for a change."

"The truth is I didn't know what the hell I was doing when your mother died. I barely believed any of this about Spirit and Callers and Marked kids.
