Chapter 31

“Raven’s been compromised.” Felix announced as he paced around the meeting room. His eyes moved between Riona, Vanaday, and Elias.

“What does that mean? Where is she?” Elias asked, rising from his chair in panic.

“Something isn’t right about her. I’m thinking one of Lorcan’s men might have done something to her during the Masquerade ball, but she won’t let me run some tests. She definitely isn’t herself, though,”

Felix sighed before continuing, “I gave her a sleeping potion a few hours ago. She hasn’t had a full night’s sleep in weeks.”

“Has it occurred to you that she’s grieving?” Elias asked, letting his voice sound throughout the tent as he slammed his palm against the long, black table that stood between them.

“This is more than grief, Eli. I’ve been training with her every night for the past two weeks, and it’s like something takes over her, and then she explodes with anger. I’ve never seen her as strong as she is when she’s this full of rage,” Felix explained to calm Elias.

“It is true, Elias. Raven has woken me many times with her late-night howls,” Vanaday added, moving to place a hand upon his shoulder.

“We need her, Felix. We’ve already lost Id, we won’t even get close to Lorcan again without Raven as well,” Riona announced, turning everyone’s attention to the monitor at her left. “Lorcan already has people in the streets, they’re executing anyone that could be a threat to the throne or his plans. Buildings burned; businesses ruined.” They all stared at the images on the screen of countless murder scenes and the rubble of buildings that had been burnt to the ground.

“She should be here Felix, she has as much to fight for as anyone else in this room,” Elias announced, turning his attention to Felix, who sighed and ran a hand through his hair.

“That isn’t your call to make, Eli. She isn’t stable. She has no interest in war any more.” Riona walked around the table until she reached Felix.

“No, but it is your call. Make her want to fight. You said it yourself. She’s at her strongest when she’s angry. Get her angry and point her in the direction of that dickhead.” Felix looked around the room in disbelief at his friends.

“Idris would never have approved of any one of us being used like that, let alone her. Elias, would you really want your sister being used as a weapon? If we do that, we’re no better than Lorcan and his father.” Felix looked into Elias’s eyes, praying that he would agree with him.

“Raven would do anything to rid Atrellia of Lorcan. If not for the people, she would do it for Idris. She would want us to do whatever it takes, even if it meant using her.” Elias replied, looking at his shoes with his fists clenched inside his pockets.

“Maybe it is time to consult the stars. If Raven is the key to our victory, they shall surely tell me.” Vanaday announced, moving towards the tent’s doorway.
