Chapter Ten

Aldrich

As they followed Lysander into the office, Aldrich’s eyes swept the room, taking note of everyone who was present, as well as the glares being aimed his way. He sighed. It would appear he hadn’t yet been forgiven for hurting Tommy, unintentional though it had been.

Tommy bumped his arm and gave him an encouraging smile. “Try not to worry about them. Once they find out about the demons, they’ll forget all about being mad at you.”

His mate was putting up a good front, but Aldrich could feel his terror through their bond. And while there was nothing he could do at that moment about the demon invasion, there was a way he could distract his mate from worrying about it. A way that would also serve to alleviate the tension in the room. At least, that was his hope.

“Before we begin our discussion, perhaps you could introduce me to everyone.”

Tommy stopped and looked at him in surprise. “But…what about the demons?”

“A few minutes delay won’t make any difference. And speaking with everyone will give them an opportunity to voice their grievances which will help make our future relations less contentious.”

“And you want to do that now?”

“I do. It is important that we clear the air so no one is distracted by past hurts when we go into battle against the queen. We must be united if we’re to have any chance of succeeding.”

Tommy gave him a long look, then nodded. “Okay, if that’s what you want. But just so you know, I’m not going to stand idly by if everyone starts taking shots at you.”

“They have a right to their anger.”

“Maybe. But that doesn’t mean they get free rein to say whatever they want.”

“I don’t wish to be a bone of contention between you and your friends.”

“Then they’d better treat you with respect.”

Before Aldrich could say anything further, Tommy got them moving again, leading him over to the far side of the room where Roman and Lysander were waiting for them. Aldrich studied the vampire prince as they approached. Roman gave off an air of civilized elegance and kindness, especially as he was now, speaking to his mate, but Aldrich knew his reputation as a ruthless and quick to violence leader in defense of his coven had been well earned. Having a mate and a son to defend would have only made him more dangerous.

Stopping in front of a large desk, Tommy said, “Roman, I’d like to formally introduce you to my mate, Aldrich. Aldrich, this is Prince Roman, Ell’s mate and leader of the North American covens.”

Roman stood, his dark eyes losing their warmth as they locked on him. He made no effort to disguise the dangerous predator that lay beneath the surface, which in turn roused Aldrich’s dragon. He and Roman spent the next couple of minutes engaged in a battle of wills, testing and pushing, with neither giving way until Roman unexpectedly inclined his head. When he raised it again, his eyes held a welcoming openness. “I am pleased to make your acquaintance, Aldrich.
