I ARRIVED FOR THE WEDDING dressed in the best clothes I'd had with me, which just happened to be a suit, because I'd attended the baptism of my granddaughter while in Colorado. Jodi was resplendent in the wedding dress, which made me proud in that I'd helped create it. Her two bridesmaids looked gorgeousâRebecca being, of course, the one who held most of my attention. The music and ceremony had gone off flawlessly, even though the duet between Rebecca and I had garnered quite a few stares from both Sarah and Kyle.
Once the ceremony had completed and everyone was shepherded into the transformed dining area, Sarah found the courage to find her way back to my side and had managed to completely monopolize my time at the dance. Short of hanging a sign on me that said ânot interested,â she would not give up on whatever hope might have existed (slim to none) that I might change my mind about who I'd rather be with.
So, when the Master of Ceremonies announced that the next song was to be ladyâs choice, I grumbled inwardly, Yet another dance with Sarah. I began to contemplate whether or not I could slit my wrists with the butter knife.
As the song began to play and people paired off, I was surprised to see Rebecca standing in front of me. âMay I have this dance?â she asked, holding out her hand with a broad smile.
âOf course!â I said, returning the smile and taking her hand.
We walked out onto the dance floor and I couldnât help but notice again how beautiful she was up close. The dark blue dress Jodi had made for her hung perfectly off every curve, her hair hung long and loose around her shoulders, rather than pulled up and away from her face the way it had been for the wedding.
A country song played, and Rebecca was more than able to dance with ease. I could feel Sarahâs eyes burning with anger as we danced. No one had accepted her request to dance, and Sarah was left standing off to the side.
I looked down at Rebecca. I thought it funny that despite my vow that Iâd never fall in love again, Iâd gone head over heels for her. As the song moved onto the another slow tune, I held her closer, and her head found my shoulder.
You could almost hear Sarah explode as she watched from the sidelines. When the song wound to a close, we walked off the dance floor together, hand in hand, and out of the dining area. It felt like being at a high school dance. We settled on the stairs in the courtyard.
There was a wonderfully cool breeze blowing and the music from the reception could still be heard, muted in the background. I held Rebecca close and we watched the stars. After a few minutes, I could feel her watching me rather than the night sky. I leaned down and kissed her. I felt her hands run through my hair, and my hands instinctively found her waist as our lips met.
