CHAPTER SIX

RANI WOKE up feeling a little woozy from the previous night’s wine but still floating on a cloud of dreams. She was taking positive control of her destiny and making grown-up decisions. She was proud of herself and hoped her confidence would rub off on her parents. She didn’t have long to test the theory. The phone rang and without thinking Rani picked it up.

‘Hello, Rani de Silver,’ she answered automatically.

‘I’m very well aware of who you are,’ the voice on the other end of the line began in an urgent angry tone. ‘The question is do you know who you are?’

‘Daddy ji?’

‘That’s right! It’s your father,’ Dr de Silver bellowed down the phone. ‘What have you got to say for yourself?’

Rani was at a confused loss of what to say since she had no idea what her father was going on about. She could hear the raised voice of her mother on the line as well, trying to control her husband.

‘Hello, darling.’ Her mother had obviously wrestled the phone from her husband’s grip. ‘Are you OK, my lovely?’

Rani blinked her eyes into focus and shook her head to wake herself up enough to concentrate.

‘I believe so, Mummy. I only saw you yesterday. What’s the matter?’

There was a moment’s hesitation in her mother’s voice before she continued.

‘Have you seen the papers this morning?’

Rani was having trouble seeing anything too clearly and she certainly hadn’t seen the papers.

‘No, why?’

‘Because you’re all over them! That’s why!’ her father exclaimed. He’d obviously grabbed the phone back. ‘Even in our paper! ‘

Rani wondered what could have happened, why she would be in the papers, what reason? Her mind fell into gear. It must have something to do with Omar; it must.

‘And you said you had only interviewed the man.’

Rani’s heart sank. What were her parents looking at? she wondered. She didn’t need to wait as her father began to quote from his paper.

‘“Who is the mystery woman seen arm in arm with Bollywood legend Omar Khan? The glamorous brunette was caught cavorting with the film hunk as he paid a surprise visit to Manchester recently. Whoever she is she certainly seemed captivated by the star and he seemed spellbound by her charms too!”‘

‘Well, what is the meaning of all this, eh?’ Dr de Silver asked brusquely.

‘Oh, that,’ Rani said as lightly as possible. ‘Oh, it’s nothing, nothing at all. I was with him. Yes, that’s right, I remember.’

‘Huh, you remember now, eh! But not when you’re talking to your parents just yesterday. What’s wrong with you? Your memory going now you’ve hit twenty-five, is that it?’

‘Calm down, Pappa,’ his wife urged. ‘Are you OK, Rani, really?’ she asked with more concern.

‘Yes, I’m fine, Mummy, honestly.’

‘Honestly? You don’t seem to know the meaning of the word!’ Her father’s voice was still dominating the three-way conversation.

‘Well, stay where you are. Daddy and I are on our way over to you right away.’

The phone went dead. Clearly her parents were heading towards her and with the speed and force of a cannonball by what Rani could make out.
