Chapter Six

Monday, December 23rd, two days until Christmas

Braxton stood, shielding the town doctor from harm. It was nothing new for him. It was his job, and he enjoyed protecting the town citizens. However, he never thought he would be standing between one of his brother-in-laws and his wife. Then again, if he really thought it all through, he should have expected it. His wife was highly volatile, and the closer she was to delivering, the more aggravating she became.

What was supposed to be a routine checkup turned out to be a knock-down, drag-out free-for-all. Hell, if he weren’t actually in the room, he would have sworn he was ringside at a WWF wrestling match. Only this time, Stone Cold Steve Austin got his ass kicked by a Powerpuff Girl!

“Now, Charlotte, calm down,” Andy gently said from behind him. Braxton tried to keep his expression schooled, but this whole mess was just unbelievable.

“I want it out, now!” she screamed from behind Jordan, who was furiously trying to keep a hold of their wife.

“It’s not time. Soon, I promise it won’t be much longer,” Andy replied.

“You said that last week!”

“But I mean it this time. You’re already two centimeters dilated!”

“That’s wide enough! Take it now,” she snarled.

“Charlotte, calm down!” Braxton roared, but it did no good. The hell kitten of Treasure Cove was on a rampage, and nothing short of delivering their child was going to stop her.

“Charlie.” A soft voice penetrated the room. Like a whisper on the wind, everyone in the room had to strain to hear the gentle but commanding voice. Charlotte turned to the laptop sitting on the counter in the room and started crying. “Janie, help me. I can’t do this anymore.”

“Yes you can. You are the strongest woman I know. Now, apologize to Andy. He was just doing his job,” Janie insisted kindly through the screen on the laptop.

“But he said I have to wait!” Charlotte shouted again, pointing at the man behind her.

“And you will wait, and you will do it quietly. Apologize, now.”

“Fine,” Charlotte grumbled, and turned to him and Andy. Braxton felt Andy stiffen behind him as if the angel of Death was about to hand down his ultimate decree. And for a few seconds, Braxton felt the same way. What was the hell kitten going to do now? “I’m sorry I tried to shove the stethoscope up your ass, and for kicking you in the balls. I hope they don’t swell and you piss blood.”

“Charlotte?” Janie threatened retribution with her voice.

“All right!” she huffed. “And I am sorry for calling you a backwoods doctor with sadistic tendencies. I’ll buy you a new coat. I wasn’t really going to tie you up with it and shove that speculum up your dick. I knew it wouldn’t fit.”

“That’s better. Now, go sit in the waiting room and behave. I will talk to you tonight. I love you,” Janie said, smiling sweetly.

“Love you, too.” She sniffed and quietly left the room.

Braxton moved Andy out of the way as Charlotte sulked all the way to the waiting room.
