CHAPTER 23

Jason called Brooke three times Saturday morning, his concern growing with each unanswered call. He knew she had planned to drive into Dover today, but from the news reports he was seeing, as well as the steady snowfall outside his window, his worry intensified. If Alexandria already had snow sticking to the ground, he could only imagine Delaware had a good share of its own.

What if she’d had an accident? Or was stuck on the side of the road somewhere? Most of the roads leading to her dad’s farm rarely had traffic, and he had no idea if any of her neighbors even knew she was in town.

His visit to the jewelry store was putting ideas into his mind that he wasn’t sure he was ready to entertain. He had never considered that he would be ready for marriage at this point in his life. Graduate law school, pass the bar, start his career, and then start a family. Maybe he should consider reordering his priorities and put family higher on the list.

The salesperson had put the ring on hold for him, giving him the rest of the day to decide if he was ready to make such a significant purchase. His stomach clutched with worry. He could hardly consider trying to build a happily ever after if he couldn’t find Brooke.

He called again. Why wasn’t she answering her phone? Unable to stand it anymore, he went into his bedroom. He had his suitcase halfway packed, with every intention of driving to Delaware to find her, when Brooke called him back.

“Hey, I’m sorry I missed your calls. I had a bunch of financial stuff I had to take care of before the banks closed.”

Relief poured through him. “You had me worried.”

“Sorry. I figured you’d sleep in after the game last night.”

“I tried,” Jason said.

“You woke up at five again, didn’t you?”

“I can’t help it. My body doesn’t seem to understand weekends.”

“I had a cat like that once,” Brooke said. “Four o’clock and she was walking all over me until I got up and fed her.”

“Four o’clock? Now, that is crazy.”

“Yeah. A bit,” Brooke said. “I assume you already went for a run this morning. What else do you have planned for the day?”

Jason looked at the haphazardly packed suitcase on his bed. He removed a T-shirt and put it back in his dresser. “My plans keep changing.”

“I thought you were hanging out with your old roommate tonight.”

“We talked about it, but I’m not sure he’ll want to brave this weather.” Jason glanced at his watch to see it was almost five. “I guess I’ll give him a call when I hang up with you.”

“You know, this is the first time since the week after my dad’s funeral that I’ve gone more than a day without seeing you,” Brooke said. “It’s kind of weird.”

“I was thinking the same thing.” Jason finished unpacking and placed his suitcase under his bed. “What time are you planning to come back tomorrow?”

“I’ll probably head out around one.
