Chapter 33
God, it was so hot. Why was it so damn hot? That was the problem with his place, it was either too hot or too cold. Dawson grabbed me by the hand and gave it a gentle tug.
âLetâs get the hell out of here!â He said, anger putting an edge to his voice.
âWhere are we going?â
âSomeplace where we can be alone. Someplace where it isnât so damn hot,â he said, once again tugging my hand with a gentleness that defied the anger that blazed in his eyes.
The house was one he rented with a bunch of other truck drivers. Its wood slash coal burning stove was a thing of contention among the roommates. It was fine when they first rented the place in July. The large canopy of trees provided plenty of shade, so the house stayed cool throughout the summer. But since the weather changed, it seemed a constant struggle to keep the place comfortable.
I let him pull me off the couch. I wasnât looking forward to another night of roasting alive only to wake up in an ice box. That and I liked the idea of having Dawson all to myself.
But there was something different about him tonight.
âDo you have someplace in mind?â I asked as I followed him through the front door pulling it closed behind me.
âI think we will park the truck in the rest area a little east of here. The neighbors complain if we idle here in the yard, and I donât want someone knocking on my truck in the morning. I have no place to be, and you donât have to work in the morning, I want you all to myself.â
I was loving his assertiveness, âTake me away Dawson, take me away.â
He opened the passenger side door and helped me up into the seat. I looked down on him with puzzlement clearly showing on my features. There was something so different about him tonight.
âWhatâs that matter?â He asked, looking up at me with a bemused grin.
âNothing,â I lied, not sure what it was that was so different about him.
He looked at me for time, then gently closed the door and walked around the front of the truck to the driverâs side. The door swung open and Dawson pulled himself up into the driverâs seat with practiced ease. He dropped his weight into the seat causing it to complain with a swoosh of air. Something in that simple action clicked into place and I almost thought I knew why my dear sweet Dawson seemed so different, but then it was gone.
âYou okay?â He asked again.
âI am fine,â he looked at me disapprovingly. âI am just not used to seeing you mad.â
âIâm sorry, but itâs just so frustrating. I get so little time with you, and when we do have time for each other, Veronica and the others want to be a part of it. I have no place to be alone with you in that dump, and if I did, we will sweat like pigs until dawn, then wake in a frozen death embrace.
