Charlotte tugged at Josiah’s arm. “They are going for more people so they can return and murder us.”

“There were enough of them to kill us, if that’s what they wanted,” said Josiah. “It’s too far for us to turn around and go back. We have to follow them.”

As Hensons moved along the trail, they saw the Natives peeping at them from behind the trees. “Why, they are more frightened of us than we are of them,” Josiah thought.

A few minutes later, they reached the Natives’ wigwams and were met by a tall, stately man. “He must be their chief,” thought Josiah. The man indicated to his people that the strangers were indeed human beings.

Now everyone crowded around. Some poked at the children, who jumped backwards with yelps of alarm. When the children jumped, so did the Natives. But soon they were all laughing together.

Using hand signals, Josiah told the chief where his family was going and what they needed. That night, the Hensons slept in a wigwam and feasted on meat roasted over an open fire. The next morning, they walked the last twenty-five miles to Sandusky City on the shore of Lake Erie, where Josiah planned to catch a boat to Canada.
