Chapter 15
As heâd hoped, Victor was waiting for him outside the classroom during recess; unfortunately, the older boy was also distracted and thoughtful. He wasnât angry by any means, but his unexpected reticence seemed worse than outward resentment. Emilâs guilty pangs returned with a vengeance as he fell into step with Victor.
âI couldnât do it,â he said, staring at his feet and feeling his spirits sinking. âIâm sorry if you and Rene waited around for me, but I just couldnât justify showing up.â
âWe expected it, really.â
âDid you two go to the chapel last night?â
âWe didnât have to. We already knew you werenât going to come.â
Emil looked at Victor, found him looking ahead, unblinking, and sighed. He went back to staring at his shoes as they walked. âHowâd you know? ESP or something?â
âWe just expected it from you. We figured itâd take a little while before you would come around, though hopefully not too long.â
Victor was escorting Emil toward the freshman dorm, not the rectory garden. Emil was only too aware of his sin in this instance to suggest a stroll somewhere. The older boy didnât even say anything about food heâd sneaked out, let alone engage in non-stop chatter. There was a pensiveness in Victor that made Emil bite his tongue, and most of their time together was spent in awkward silence.
When they reached the chapel, Victor looked at it and slowed down. âI should let you go here,â he said, though he sounded as if he were speaking more to himself than to Emil.
âOkay. Umâthanks for walking with me.â Emil glanced hopefully at his companion, but Victor completely ignored him. Without saying another word, the older boy turned and walked toward the chapel, not stopping even as he disappeared through the entrance.
Emil, goaded on by curiosity, waited a moment and then tiptoed toward the chapel door and peeked in.
Since recess had just started, no one was there. Emil watched as Victor walked toward the apse, stopped, bowed his headâor was he looking at something on the ground?âand then knelt down. He raised both hands before him and brought them together as though holding something. He was leaning on it, his head still bowed.
Emil frowned as he watched. âWhat the heck,â he whispered, but he dared not do anything else. There was something not only private about what he was seeing, but also otherworldly. He waited for a moment to see if Victor was going to do something, but nothing came of it. The senior appeared to be lost in meditation or prayer, and he kept his position without moving to rest. At length, Emil was convinced heâd seen what was needed and that he should head back to the dining hall before Victor caught him spying.
As he withdrew, he thought he caught sight of something silver and metallic gleaming in Victorâs hands. Something tall enough for Victor to lean against in prayer or meditation with a part that was wide enough to be glimpsed even with Victorâs back to the chapel door.
