Chapter Sixteen

James didn’t notice the twil-lythrau glowing at first. But once it started to get dark in the apartment, he realized there was a definite luminescence coming from the carving on the top.

When he opened it, there was a message inside. It had to be from Shan. There had been a small stash of messages with the box when they found it, and each one of them bore the elder’s seal.

He was surprised to find two messages inside, one wrapped in the other. The first one instructed Freoric to deliver the second to the queen’s mother. Shan had never communicated with them before. Why would he? Avenall said he thought of humans as animals, beneath his notice.

His heart skipped a beat when he recognized the handwriting in the second note. His sock drawer was full of similar messages, folded into paper footballs and covered with doodled hearts and flowers. Lizbet had always said she liked to write him notes instead of texting, even though it wasn’t cool, after she saw it in an old movie they’d watched together. She said it felt more personal. And after texting stopped being a thing…

He’d kept every single note she’d ever written him.

But this one was addressed to Sheila, and its content was strange. He didn’t know what to think. And it wasn’t his to keep. He hurried to the Moore’s house next door.

He knocked loudly. “Sheila. There’s a message from Lizzie. Sheila!”

She appeared at the door with a mixing bowl in her arms. “From Lizzie? You’ve seen her?”

She set the bowl of batter on the floor, forgotten, when he offered her the letter. She read it, then looked up at him. “Why does she say she doesn’t remember me?”

“That could happen if she took off her medallion. But there’s no way she would do that. It’s Shan who sent the note for Freoric to deliver to you. It could just be Shan trying to trick us. But he obviously doesn’t have her, because his letter shows he thinks Freoric is still in Ohio.”

“Shan? Avenall’s father? That horrible man?”

“Yeah, that horrible elf. But I can’t figure out why. There were no threats, no ‘I’ve got your daughter so call off your troops’. I’m worried about her mentioning Bacchus and a wedding. If it’s true that she’s with Bacchus—I can’t believe he’s back, but if he is—well, there’s history there with Morgan. And if she doesn’t have her own memories, she wouldn’t have Morgan’s memories, either, so she wouldn’t know about him. The thing I don’t get is that Bacchus went beyond when Myrddin was still young, and everything in his memories tells me that no old god has ever come back from there. But that doesn’t mean someone isn’t masquerading as Bacchus. And while Bacchus wouldn’t hurt ‘Morgan’, if someone’s pretending to be him…” His voice trailed off.

“Is her letter some kind of code, maybe? Does it mean anything to you that it doesn’t say? At least we know, well…” Sheila’s lower lip quivered, and she stopped talking abruptly.
