Chapter Seventeen

Ignoring the protests, Stephen walked right past Paterson’s watchdog secretary.

“You can’t go in there,” she snapped.

He didn’t stop to debate the issue with her. He had the door to Paterson’s office open and shut behind him before she could push the button on the intercom and warn Paterson he was getting company.

Paterson leaned over his desk. His jacket off, his sleeves rolled up. Even his tie was loose around his neck. The casualness of his appearance, as if there wasn’t a care in the world, kicked Stephen’s anger up two notches.

“Where is she?”

The door opened, the secretary looking pale. “Security is on the way.” She spoke past Stephen as if he weren’t even there.

“No, it’s fine,” Paterson said, dismissing her with the wave of her hand. “Cancel it.”

“But—” she said.

“I’ll take care of it. Now excuse us.”

The door shut, leaving the men staring at each other.

Paterson looked up over his glasses and gave Stephen a blank stare.

“She was supposed to be back three days ago and there’s been no word.”

“You mean you have had no word.”

Stephen continued to stare, waiting for the enlightenment that would tell him why his wife was missing. Paterson only stared back.

“Well?”

“Does the term covert operation mean anything to you?”

“I know she was going to Central America. It was an in-and-out job. She should have been back. Three days ago.”

“Sometimes these things don’t go as planned.”

Three months they had been back. Stephen let his mind do the calculations. Jaime was spending all this time watching Paterson, making sure he stayed away from him and Dylan. Who was making sure she was out of the line of fire?

“She was compromised,” Paterson said. The look on his face said sorrow and regret while the glimmer in his eyes told Stephen volumes about what went down.

“How are you getting her back?”

Paterson picked up a file off his desk, handing it to Stephen.

“We’re not.”

“What do you mean we’re not? We don’t leave our people behind.”

“We’re leaving her.”

Fury ran its way across Stephen’s nerves. “What’s this?” he said, motioning to Paterson with the file.

“It’s everything we have on the op.”

Stephen opened it, reading the highlights while Paterson watched.

“What am I supposed to do with this?”

“You want her back? Go get her.”
