Chapter Twenty-two

The Collingsworth Manor

After leaving the funeral for his friend, Tucker stepped deep into the woods at the edge of The Hollows Cemetery and morphed into his wolf form, not bothering to remove his suit first. Oddly, the tearing of his clothes brought him some perverse satisfaction. He was angry and needed to clear his head. Sebastian Barrister had obviously lied to him. He had assured him that none of his friends would be hurt—at least not until after he had the chance to turn them into a hybrid as he was. Barrister had told him he could form his own pack. He should’ve known it was a lie. Sam always said that you couldn’t trust a bloodsucker! He was right. He realized now how foolish he had been.

The more he thought about Barrister, the angrier he became. Clearly he was not as big a part of the vampire’s plans as he had believed. He would show them! He didn’t need Sebastian Barrister any more. He could take control of The Hollows without his help. He was already stronger than any of the other wolves, including Keegan Rourke, despite the man’s incredible size.

The thought of Rourke made him pause. Admittedly, he was a dangerous man, and likely twice as deadly while in wolf form. But he was a loose cannon, and couldn’t be trusted. Would Barrister really consider making him a hybrid? That was a horrifying thought. He could definitely be a big problem. He needed to stop Rourke before it was too late. The Hollows wasn’t big enough for two alpha male hybrids. And he was responsible for killing his friend. For that, he would pay!

The Collingsworth Manor was located at the northern edge of The Hollows, in what was commonly referred to as Snob Hill. Several other large houses were nearby, all occupied by wealthy members of the Coven. He had not been surprised at all when Elizabeth Wellington had been so easily removed from the coven hierarchy. Marybeth Collingsworth had gathered the priestesses loyal to her, kept them close, and simply shut the old woman out. The new power structure within the Coven intimidated those who had been devoted to Elizabeth, bending them to their will. Marybeth kept everyone in line through fear of reprisal. No one wanted to face Sebastian Barrister’s wrath and be turned into a creature of the night, as the former Coven leader had been. If someone as powerful as Elizabeth Wellington could fall, so too could those less capable.

Fear was a powerful tool.

But if he could take out Sebastian Barrister, he could make them all cower to him. As the only hybrid he would be unstoppable. Marybeth Collingsworth would either pledge her support to him, or she would be replaced. Ironically, many of the Coven were already looking at Shelby as the High Priestess in Waiting – especially after their silly ceremony of Drawing Down the Moon. He smiled. Shelby was already taking a greater interest in him since he had become a hybrid; she was inexplicably drawn to power.
