Despite all Lucy’s entreaties, Byron refused to stay with her that night, which she couldn’t help suspecting had less to do with her cooking than it did with the loud music that could be heard from the next-door flat.

‘Oh my lord,’ said Lucy, re-entering the flat after bidding Byron a passionate reconciliatory farewell. ‘It’s not only loud, their taste in music is completely horrible.’ Through the wall could be heard the mournful strains of a Celine Dion power ballad. ‘It’s so bloody loud. Do you think we should say something?’

Chloe looked nervous. ‘You know how I hate confrontations, Lucy.’

‘Well do you want me to bang on the wall then?’ suggested Lucy. ‘They’ll get the message.’

‘No, that’s even worse, I think. Let’s just leave it. Maybe they’ll go to bed soon and turn it off.’

Lucy listened intently for a moment and then shuddered. ‘Oh god. I think they’re singing along now. That’s it. I’m going to bed.’

‘Me too.’ Chloe stood up and stretched. ‘I thought I had earplugs somewhere but I can’t find them.’

‘Try socks,’ Lucy advised, with an authoritative air. ‘Although it’s really hard to get them to stay in your ears.’
