Wayland Prison – people you meet in jail

So, they shipped us back to Pentonville to start our unfair sentences. I made some good friends in the Ville: Buggsy Maloney, Benny Stafford, Richie Faulkner, Lennie Smith, Robert Fox, all good men. After one month I was shipped out to Wayland. My solicitor, Colin Nott, has not stopped working for me and I owe him a huge debt of thanks. I am proud to call Colin not only my solicitor, but my friend. He has always been there when I needed him and his advice had been invaluable. He’s a good man.

My pals in Wayland are John Waites, Peter Spelling, Danny Hinton, Brian Darby, Sauce, Jason Hooper and, of course, Reg Kray. They are all lovely people. I feel sorry for Reggie, he’s spent over 31 years in prison. It’s difficult to imagine anyone surviving that sentence, but he never moans or groans at all. He is a real man who I am proud to call a friend. I think he should be released now. He is getting very tired and worn out. He has paid his debt to society in full.

So, as I sit at my window, looking at fields, I’ve got two more gun charges courtesy of Victory Bellamy to go back on, then my appeal. So I’ve just got to wait and see how long I’ll have to serve.

I opened my mail today. It’s a card from Mickey Gluckstead. Like Mickey, I’ve had a few more fights in prison, but that’s another story. Since I’ve been in prison I’ve heard many stories about Mickey that even I didn’t know, and it’s the general opinion that Mickey is one of the hardest people in the prison system and every prison he’s been in he’s been top dog.

Me and John Waites left Pentonville together. First, we had to call in to High Point Prison near Newmarket, where Lester Piggott had done his time, as four other prisoners from the Ville were going there. We had dinner there. As the ruddy-faced screw served our dinner, I said, ‘Governor, I’ve got a serious question to ask you.’ He said, ‘Go on.’ I said, ‘I know this is race-horse territory, so answer me this question if you can. When is the only time a 20-stone schwarzer (black man) has rode a Derby winner?’ This country yokel scratched his head and said, ‘You’ve got me there. Who’s that then?’ I replied, ‘Piggot’s cell mate.’ This screw went potty. ‘What,’ he said, ‘Lester’s a living legend round these parts!’ and just stormed off. Me and John just creased up laughing.

Then, on to Wayland. Wayland Prison is the end of the line. If any other prison won’t accept a prisoner, he gets shipped out to Wayland. It’s miles from anywhere, in the heart of Norfolk. It’s a C Cat prison with A Cat security in force. The first day out in the yard, a barrel-chested fellow came up to us. It was Peter Spelling. He gave me and John two phone cards each and said, ‘Here you are, ring home.
