Chapter 7

IT WAS dark when Owen turned the Sundancer toward open water and headed home. Sitting in the seat beside him, she watched him check the monitors and set a course. When he was satisfied, he held out his hand for her, tugging until she was in his lap.

The engine hummed and the water slapped at the hull as they cut through gentle waves. But the most powerful sensation was the feel of Owen’s arms around her. She felt his hard thighs under her bottom and the wall of his chest at her side as she relaxed into him.

“Usually, you can see more stars than you ever knew were there, but not with this moon.”

Charlotte leaned her head back into the crook of his arm and looked up at the ink black sky. “It’s beautiful.” And so was the moment. The romance of the stars, the moon, and the warm air stroking her skin. Even after their first date on solid ground, going on the boat had been a risk. One she was glad she’d taken.

“See the Big Dipper? There?” He lifted her hand and pointed with his own. “And if you draw a line straight across, you’ll hit Leo.” He lowered her hand, and with their fingers tightly linked, crossed her arms over her stomach.

She relaxed even more, thinking she’d never felt quite so safe, this feeling of being held by a man, the sense of safety mixing with lust.

“I was wondering…”

“What?”

“Earlier, when I called you Charlie…”

“Yeah?” She shivered at his hot breath behind her ear, wanting him to kiss her there.

“You got this look on your face. Maybe it was the hook in your finger, not that that wouldn’t be plenty, or maybe… you don’t like being called that and I offended you.”

“Well, I did have a hurt finger,” she teased and held it up like a child holding up a booboo. He kissed it tenderly, which made her heart catch. The pain in her finger had distracted her, but she hadn’t forgotten the nickname. “It didn’t offend me or anything.” She stared across the water for a moment, following the stream of silver the moon cast. “My mom used to call me that,” she finally said. “No one else did and no one else has since then.”

His arms tightened a little. “I’m sorry.”

She was struck by his sensitivity, that he’d noticed her reaction and cared enough to ask about it. She had the urge to kiss his smooth cheek. Her lips pressed to the warm skin, and she inhaled his scent, male and sexy aftershave. And Owen. “Don’t be sorry,” she said softly, lifting her head to meet his eyes.

When she would have shifted back, he caught her behind the neck and pulled her in for a real kiss. Heat flared, her heart jolted, and her mind floated on the pleasure of Owen’s mouth on hers. Her hands held to his shoulders as they tested, tasted, and savored. And when his fingers dug into her hip, she moaned.
