Chapter 30
Wade
Wadeâs father exploded, âWhat the hell, Tony?â
âCalm down. Iâm not arresting him.â Tony slipped the Miranda card into his pocket. âBefore I take a statement, Iâve got to read this. Protocol.â
Wade retched, the vomit burning a track through the back of his throat, splattering on the shiny, gray linoleum floor in a pea green starburst. His dad skirted to the left, but not before a few flecks splashed on his jeans.
âGet the doctor,â he said, disgusted. âDamn it, Linda. Go!â
His mother darted into the hallway. Her purse fell to the floor.
âGive it a break, Tony.â Wadeâs dad punched his fist into his palm. âNowâs not the time. Iâll bring him in tomorrow after heâs discharged.â
âBuddy, Iâm sorry. But itâs got to be this way. In the long run, it will be better if Vitullo canât find any mistakes.â
A nurse hurried into the room, his mother a step behind her.
âLie down. The doctorâs coming.â She picked up the phone on the wall. âOrderly to exam room 3.â
âIâll need the blood alcohol test results,â Tony said to the nurse.
âFine. If thatâs the way it is, fine,â his dad said. He looked at Wade and a flicker of understanding passed between them. And then he glared at Tony. âWeâll wait for our lawyer.â
âSure. Let me know when he shows up.â Tony turned, took a giant step over the puddle of vomit, and left the room.
His mother followed him into the hallway. âI canât believe youââ
âLinda!â his father yelled. âGet in here.â
His mother scurried into the room. âSorry.â She pinched her fingers between her eyes and smudged her eyeliner. âOh, this smells. We need an attorney for Wade to speak with Tony?â Mom spun her ring around and around. âThis is getting out of hand. My God, Tonyâs sat at my Thanksgiving table, and he canât give us a simple courtesy right now?â She grabbed her purse, whipped out her lipstick, and ran it across her lips, coloring one side a smidgeon higher than the other as if it made a difference.
The doctor opened the door. âWade, I thought I better check in on our most famous patient right now. Iâll get an orderly in here to clean this up.â
âI already called,â the nurse said.
