Chapter 9

Braxton

Lark brings us lunch. It’s been several hours since we transmitted Grainne’s message. We have no way of knowing if Trea got it or not. We’re now trying to determine when to make the next one. Lehen is recording another one at the moment, to be broadcasted at a later time. Because he’s starting to look unwell, I suggested he make his now. It’s nothing major, just a subtle change in his demeanor and lethargy. I think I’m the only one who notices it, but it’s still concerning as this is probably the beginning of his end.

Just after dinner, Lark tries to access Jin’s tablet, but it’s blocked. She has to circumvent the programming to see why it’s not working. A message shows up on the monitor behind us in the transmission room. Lark works on opening it up since it’s a direct feed from the tablet.

“Looks like someone is recording,” Lark says, trying to open up the image.

A small keypad comes into focus along with someone typing in a code. In the background, we can make out several people exiting what looks like a lift. The device continues to record, but there isn’t anyone in the lift for some time. Lark speeds up the recording. It only goes so far before turning into a live feed. The door for the lift opens, and only a few people climb on board.

“I wish we could see who they are,” I say.

“Since it’s live, I can adjust the camera angle,” Lark says, turning her attention to the control panel under the monitor.

Trea and Reider come into view, along with several other people. Trea looks like she’s been through hell. She’s leaning up against Reider from what looks like pure exhaustion. I step closer to the screen and see spatters of blood on her clothes.

“Any sound with this?” Vier asks, joining me. Lark pushes a button on her panel and the speakers above our heads come to life.

“We’ll need to get some rest before we leave tomorrow,” Reider says, addressing everyone in the lift. “The Premier is counting on us to end these attacks.”

“How do we find them?” a woman next to him asks.

“Dr. Hersher told me they have tracking devices imbedded in their skin. We should be able to locate them that way.”

“Who are they?” another person asks.

“All I know is that they’re called Keons. Other than that I don’t know,” Reider responds.

Keons? Wait, what? What has happened now? Is Vladim actually having a revolt on his hands?

“Lark,” Drych calls out from a speaker by the door to the room. “We received a new transmission from one of the spies in Tyre. He says that there was an attack at the arena in Tyre. A Keon named Aeron severely injured a commander and tried to kill Andred. He also says that the Keons have executed five Antaeans in a mass demonstration aimed at Vladim.”

“Thanks Drych,” Lark says, terminating the call.

Neo begins to giggle, “Looks like we didn’t need to try and cause a rebellion.
