Chapter Eight

Max

Lara is slow to wake, and I savor it. She stretches amongst the sheets, bare to my eyes, and it’s a sight I’ve missed dearly over the three years she’s been imprisoned. I ache to cuddle her close and never let go for fear she’ll be taken from me again.

Her eyes pop open, and with a frown, she looks around her. Her eyes eventually connect with mine, and she freezes.

“What the fuck?” she mumbles, slowly dragging herself upright to stare at me with wonder. “I thought it was all a dream.”

I give her my best grin. “We were that good, huh?”

She snorts, then finally smiles, and internally I cheer for erasing that heartbreaking fear I spotted tucked beneath her confusion and wonder.

“Where are the others?”

“Breakfast,” I answer as I stand from the too-comfy chair beside the bed. I couldn’t bear to leave her sight this morning, so I offered to wait for our bonded to wake up so I can escort her downstairs to the dining room. Obviously, this wasn’t a hardship at all.

Lara gets out of bed and glides over to give me a sweet kiss that I ache to deepen, but the rumble of her stomach has me stopped before I’ve even begun. All too quickly, she draws away and slides Sigurd’s massive shirt over her body. Then she heads to the door with an exaggerated sway to her hips that has my dick hardening in my pants. The knowing look she levels at me over her shoulder tells me she’s doing it on purpose, and my grin widens.

I take her hand and pull her along as we pass through hallway after hallway in this massive castle, until finally we arrive at the dining hall and step through. Kelvin, Rio, and Sigurd all stop in their tracks and turn as one. Lara isn’t the least bit bothered and just plops down at one of the two open place settings, then starts to tuck in. I claim the seat on her left and join in, though I spend most of my meal watching her instead.

I’m yanked from my silent study the moment she sets her utensils down and speaks.

“Are we going to talk about your auras?” my bonded asks with a curious tilt to her head.

“What about them?” I tease, knowing exactly what she’s talking about. She rolls her eyes at me, and I smirk. “We had to do some… questionable things to spring you out of your prison.”

Lara frowns, and her shoulders drop like the weight of the worlds were suddenly thrust upon her. It makes my heart ache. “You shouldn’t have tainted yourselves. You shouldn’t have had to.”

“We don’t regret a thing we did to save you,” Kelvin remarks in that no-nonsense way of his, and it’s true; we don’t regret a damn thing when it comes to her, aside from our regret at not preventing her from going to prison at all. We also regret not finding the fucker who sent her there and killing him, but regret for the actions we took to get her out of there? No.
