Ever feel all itchy and uncomfortable for no specific reason? That was what I felt like being inside of Helm. If Willow could hide here, I wanted to make sure there was nothing else out there waiting to go bump in the night. I took to exploring the island, every chance I had. Most of it was untouched forest, there were some craggy hills overlooking a narrow strip of beach with cloud-white sand. The trees were completely out of my realm of experience, but I guessed I should have expected it from the very nature of this place where I lived. If half-breeds had drifted here, it made sense the trees would have done so, as well.

My visits to my growing menagerie continued. Helm’s elite warriors might all complain about the creatures I’d adopted, but it didn’t keep the boys from enjoying them on the daily.

Bobi’s games of monster fetch with Marmaduke drew a regular crowd of visitors. The giant eagles we had brought back from Siberia were giving rides to some of the younger, smaller members of Helm. Even Nessie, yes, the one from Scotland, had started to drag kids on surfboards for trips around the southern cove.

Turned out all kids want some kind of pet, and I’d supplied a bunch of them.

We find a kitty, it’s going in my room; I don’t care how big it is.

I was sitting on the shore of the pond in the middle of the island where the water nymphs and elementals tended to gather. Watching their multi-colored bodies glide through the water was soothing. They didn’t bother me as long as I didn’t go into their domain. I suspected they were really into the whole exhibitionist thing, based on the amount of gymnastic moves they would start to pull as soon as I drew near.

Leaning against a small rock formation, I was more comfortable than in my Dad’s Lazy Boy. I was hoping it didn’t unfold into some other person ready to lay some mind trip on me. Still haven’t gotten anywhere on Azar’s riddle. Little did she know I couldn’t find my family, much less my power.

Forget about Wren’s being all Haydn plus Verity equals no-no.

Stomping footsteps heralded the end of my meager mental gymnastics.

“What are you doing here?”

Haydn. I’m not looking. I will not fall under his dark seductive gorgeousness. I am woman. Hear me roar. I am stronger than the pull of this one guy. My mom raised me to be an independent woman. His dimple will not defeat me.

Yep, I looked.

“Just hanging.”

“You’ve been spending time with Book, haven’t you?”

I smiled. “Sit. Join me."

He parked it while casting nervous looks at the waves. The nymphs and water elementals were all far beneath the surface. “I’m surprised they let you watch them. They’re usually more shy.”

“I think they like it.”

“Probably. It’s hard to resist spending time with you.”

“Then why even try?”

Haydn chuckled. “Self-preservation.”

“Right,” I began to run my fingers into the blades of grass by my side. “Because I’m so dangerous.
