Ella typed the menu into her notebook and passed it over to Massimo. “What do you think?”

“It is perfect,” he said with a smile. “You have a gift. I barely suggested anything.”

“Well, it’s partly a combination of the first meal you had together, and the meal you had when you first proposed to Mrs. Afriyie.” Ella grinned. “Women talk.”

“That they do.”

Aunt Belinda happened to be the type of auntie Ella genuinely wished she’d had in her life growing up. Someone who absolutely deserved to be happy. To see the world with a man at her side who saw everything that she needed. In between her lessons to Arlo, and her sightseeing tours with Massimo, she came to the restaurant for a chat and a short walk around the city, finding something new and interesting each day.

Belinda’s curiosity and her joy in the simplest of things touched Ella deeply. For instance, knowing how if she hadn’t met Massimo Da Canaveze at all, if she would be languishing in her home in Thornton Heath. Alone. Sad. Without a real family of her own. Love did funny things to people. And mostly it came to those who deserved it entirely.

Belinda talked of her husband-to-be as if he were Peter the fisherman before he became Peter upon whom the Church was built; one who had been sanctified and seen the error of his ways. How he had acknowledged his past wrongdoings, and in his love for her, committed to staying a good Christian man. Another person who didn’t know the couple would call her deluded. Ella knew she wholeheartedly believed her fiancé. And he would do absolutely anything for her.

Massimo glanced back down at the menu and Ella watched his face carefully. The resemblance to Durante was most disturbing. It reminded her how much she missed him. Being able to tease him. Burrow under his skin.

It had been a few weeks since their talk, and she blessed the man for giving her the space to think. But the words they exchanged continued to play on her mind. How hard he’d worked to heal from what he’d done, what had been taken from him. In her son’s ignorance, Ella could continue to pretend she hadn’t done bad, if not worse, things. Deep down, she wanted to be able to share everything with Durante, or as much as her femininity would allow. One could always share too much. But would her presence inevitably lead him to ruin? It seemed more likely.

“I understand you are making the move to Lucca permanent?”

She jolted from her reverie, and answered Massimo. “Yes. My home in London has been sold. It’s a seller’s market at the moment, and I’m very pleased. We’ve put an offer in for the cottage. I say we; obviously I mean me, but Rufus has a say sometimes.”

“How old is your son?”

“Just turned twelve.” Ella’s smile of pride couldn’t be suppressed. “We had a lovely village-style party for him at one of the B&Bs down the road from the cottage.
