Chapter 11

Whirey Swamp

Maybe the High Duke wasn’t so terrible after all, I mused as I sat in the slowly swinging gondola. The trip was a good three hours back to Unity, but I’d be home by dinner time. OK, so it was only an overnighter, and I’d had to wear the hated Breaker full armour which had been given back especially for the occasion, but yay! I was going to see my family!

I could also take the chance to update Aria, Lanny and my other friends too, to let them know I was OK. It cheered me to think that if Shandlin had relented on this matter, then perhaps he’d relent even further as time went by. Or maybe I’d have truly escaped, and it wouldn’t matter anymore.

I watched the city skim by below my otherwise empty gondola cabin – the emptiness almost definitely because of that same brown uniform. No one wanted to share with a Breaker. The scenery below me was too urban and busy and chaotic, sure, but in these last few months I’d come to see a beauty in it that perhaps the Vyce locals had always noticed. There was something about human beings cooperating to build such places, something almost magical in seeing houses and apartments and factories all so closely together, like parts of a giant machine. It might have a single ruler at its head, but the true Vyce was made up of millions of individuals, and they were what kept it running.

By the time I reached Unity I was feeling almost kind towards the High Duke. So he was completely self-absorbed, moody and controlling; but perhaps he wouldn’t have been so bad if he’d been raised differently. If he’d had a few boundaries growing up, and if he’d had a decent role model, then perhaps he’d have grown up to be a good guy. As it was, it appeared he at least wasn’t a complete monster.

But there was still the issue of the stolen jewels. I mused whether I could contact Derry, get him to give them back? It had only been a few days; surely he’d still have them.

My gondola came to rest in the town’s last stop, only a few minutes from my family home. I took the helmet off as I got out, but a moment too late. A tiny paint bomb came flying at me, hitting me in the shoulder and spraying my armour with vivid green. “Hey!” I shouted at nobody in particular. “It’s Iscendra Cole! Who the suds did that?!”

There was silence, broken by the sound of scrambling by a nearby building. Nobody raised their hand to admit it, although I’d manage to catch the attention of all three people within earshot. “Breakers don’t even use gondolas,” I muttered to no one in particular. Ignorant vandals didn’t even know that much.

“Iscendra?” A dark-skinned girl about my own age called across to me. I recognised her as Padi, someone I’d gone to school with, although we hadn’t been particular friends.
