Chapter 14
Fall Out
The world was hazy when it returned. And painful. Awareness assaulted him: the light, the noise, the pounding in his head and the warmth of liquid on his face. He wanted to move, but his body wouldnât respond. It wanted to just lie there on the uncompromising concrete in a pool of its own blood. He was tempted to give in to that, but an unexpected voice had made him stir.
âGet out of my sight,â the voice was saying. âIf I see you tomorrow itâll be for the last time.â
âYouâre firing me?â
âDid I say I was firing you? I said donât come in tomorrow.â
âHis carâs blocking me in.â
âWalk home for all I care. Just go.â
Connor dragged his arms towards his torso and used them to push himself up. Red dripped from his mouth and face. He groaned and rolled onto his side. When he looked up with the one eye that would open, it was to see Markâs retreating back and Artieâs grim expression.
Artie crouched down to his level and inspected his face. âAnything broken?â
Conner felt his cheek. Used his tongue to check that all his teeth were where they should be. âNo.â
âLost your memory again?â
âNo.â
âGot it all back?â
How could he tell? âDunno.â
âDid you hit him?â
Connor got gingerly to his feet, Artie offering some much needed support, and shook his head.
âGood, thatâs good. Then itâs all on him. I should have known, you know. I should have guessed that last yearâs tussle was because of her.â He paused. âI guessed I thought more of the two of you than that.â He looked away.
âWhat are you doing here, old man?â Connor had too much going on right now to worry about Artieâs disappointment.
âDane called.â
âRight.â
âI have half a mind to knock you out myself,â Artieâs voice wavered and he swallowed. âI told you not to hurt her, Connor. Sheâs suffered enough. Canât you see that sheâs suffered enough? You donât need to remember anything; you donât need to know her for more than a day to see that sheâs in pain!â
âI know.â His voice sounded thick. He leaned against the wall and held his breath a moment. âI didnât mean it. I panicked. She has this big secret, and I feel⦠She should have told me.â
Artie pressed his fingers to his temple and turned on the spot. He threw his hand out, clearly agitated. âWould you admit to having being engaged to that excuse of a man?â
Connor pushed himself off the wall. âYou knew? How could you possibly know?â
âNo one ever gives me enough credit. I just know, okay? Let me ask you something: Have you told Emma about Asha? About how you went to the first woman that you knew would have you, just so that you could flaunt her in Emmaâs face? Or how about the brief thing you had a year ago with whatâs-her-name from head office?â
âI donât rememberââ
âYou never told her before the accident when you remembered everything. You kept those things from her. Are you
