THERE IS NO TIME FOR sleep. I need to get back because tomorrow is when the bomb is going to hit the farmhouse. It seems I’m meant to save the family, especially the boys, for some reason. I don’t know how or what I’m going to do, and Alfred can’t offer any help as nobody knows quite for sure how anything is going to play out. Whom do I trust? Well, the only ones so far are Francis and Jack.

I leave the castle more confused than ever. As I’m heading back home to let mum know I won’t be having dinner, I see Gramps leaving the gate and heading towards the house. Did he just time travel? Is that where he has been?

‘What’s he doing?’ I whisper, edging behind a tree so he doesn’t see me. Once he’s gone inside, I dash towards the back door and stumble into the kitchen.

‘Alright?’ I ask them both as they sit at the kitchen table having tea. I pretend I don’t know anything about Gramps travelling through the gate or what Alfred had shown me.

Gramps put his cup down. ‘There you are. How’s it going, Dan?’

Mum lifts her head from a book she has in front of her. ‘You’re out all the time lately. How are your friends? You should invite them over for tea.’

‘I’m not sure if they’ll be allowed.’ I reach for the cupboard and take out a packet of ginger biscuits. ‘Mind if I take these?’ I ask, and before anyone can question me, I’m back out the door and walking through the gate again. Only this time I’m more on alert.

As I’m walking to the farmhouse, Francis runs down the lane towards me. ‘I wondered when you’d be back,’ he says, eyeing the packet of biscuits in my hand. ‘What are those?’ he asks, and I can almost feel his hunger pangs.

‘Here,’ I offer him the packet. ‘You can have them,’ I say.

‘Cor! A whole packet?’ His eyes pop. ‘Must be so handy living in the future, eh? I bet you got lots of yummy things to eat.’

‘You may as well have them all.’ I say and make a mental note to fetch more goodies next time, even though I wasn’t sure I was supposed to. I cannot see what harm food would do. ‘So, have any other things happened since I’ve been gone?’ I ask as we walk towards the cliffs.

‘Yes, in fact, Fritz’s place has been busy. People are coming and going. I see them sometimes from my bedroom window. And Seamus has been acting oddly. He comes to the house with Mr Granger after Home Guard duty, and he’s been very quiet. Not like his usual self.’

‘We need to figure this out and soon,’ I say.

‘Yeah, we must. There may even be an award in it. Shall we go for a walk?’ he asks. ‘The RAF do their training today and I love watching them.’

‘Sure, why not?’ I reply and we head towards the cliffs.

‘What’s your favourite plane?’ He asks as we walk down the path.
