Interstitial lung disease

Interstitial lung disease is the most common form of lung disease, in which there is a broadening of the walls of the alveoli causing the brinchii to dilate. This condition can be caused by idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, granumlomatous disorders, and pneumonoconiosis. A patient with interstitial lung disease will typically present with quick, shallow respiration and pronounced dyspnea during and after exertion. Finally, the patient is likely to have a nonproductive cough. A chest X ray will indicate either a reticular pattern or, in more severe cases, a honeycomb pattern. Laboratory tests will indicate normal levels of forced expiratory volume per second, and diminished levels of total lung capacity, diffusing capacity of carbon monoxide, and forced vital capacity. The patient diagnosed with interstitial lung disease should be given supportive treatment and should avoid the agent that causes the condition.
