The next day they had one client, and she wanted her hair done—but only if she could pay the old price of fifteen dollars. For the rest of the week they had four other clients. And no tips. The weekend came and buying barber chairs wasn’t mentioned. Saturday, Keeba had two clients.

Sunday, the salon was closed, a relief to them both. They spent the afternoon in Toya’s apartment. She showed them the salon Web site’s new images from the opening, the links she’d set up with other black hair sites, and the hit counter that recorded the number of site visitors. Teesha asked about computer school.

“It’s really hard,” Toya answered, “and half the time I feel like the teachers are speaking a different language, but I’m learning so much. Come to the living room and check out the digital photo montage I put together for my parents’ wedding anniversary. You too, Kee.”

“Nah, that’s all right. I like cruising this Web site. But why you ain’t put in my baby pictures I gave you?”

Teesha and Toya played with the digital camera, taking pictures of each other and deleting the bow-wows that didn’t come out cute enough. When they returned to the bedroom to load the images, Toya did a double-take at their Web site.

“I don’t know how you’re doing it,” she exclaimed. “TeeKee’s had seven visitors, what, a half hour ago, and now there’s twenty-five! Your site is drawing mad trade.”

“Oh, that was me,” said Keeba. “I kept clicking it while y’all was in the living room so the number Would go up and we’d look more popular.”

“Awww,” moaned Toya, holding her head.

Teesha couldn’t contain herself. “Duh, duh, and duh. All for you.”

“Whatever. At least our Web site don’t seem like some reject dot-com nobody wanna look at.”
