At bedtime, Cynthia kissed her father goodnight and made her way to her childhood bedroom. She pulled a box from under the bed. Her high school memories. She first came to a picture of her as senior prom queen, several of her cheering at a game, and then she found some pictures bound together. She slid off the rubber band and thumbed through the photos she’d taken of Tristen.

At seventeen, he’d worn his hair longer, and he wasn’t as filled out. She had loved him so deeply. She only had one of them together. It hadn’t turned out so well with her holding the camera.

Over that summer, they had the cottage to themselves when his dad was out. They made love often. When they weren’t in bed, they swam, rode horses, and played tennis.

Her father tapped on the door. “Are you still awake?”

She quickly tucked the pictures of Tristen at the bottom of her memory box. “Yes. Come in.”

“I intended to mention this earlier, but it slipped my mind. I had a chance to speak with Tristen. I know you’ll be angry with me, but I asked about that summer.”

“I know. He told me.”

Surprise reflected in her father’s eyes. “He did?”

“Yes. I attended Mallory’s birthday party today. He mentioned it.”

“Have you told Tristen about the pregnancy?”

“No, I will when the opportunity arises.”

He pulled out a chair by the desk and sat down. “I didn’t come to talk about him. You should know about my will.”

“You said you were making some slight changes.”

“Well, I guess slight might be an understatement.”

Cynthia wondered if he had cut her out of the business. “What did you do?”
