KATHERINE SAT next to Nick on the dais, barely able to take her eyes from him. His broad shoulders filled out the tuxedo jacket perfectly, the cummerbund accented his flat stomach. Sexy came in all flavors with this guy, tuxedos or jeans or…nothing at all. Her imagination took flight, and she squeezed his hand.

He brushed his lips across her temple. “Later, baby, later. Just hold that thought.”

She felt familiar heat invade her cheeks and reached for her glass of water. When she let her guard down, she was an open book. Maybe sitting with Nick wasn’t such a great idea. Suzanne’s table would have been safer. But she’d wanted to be with Nick.

She looked at him now as he rose to acknowledge the thanks of the university. A smile, a wave and not a single nervous gesture before he took the microphone.

“There’s no doubt that I’m a better builder than a speech maker. So tonight I’ve decided to give you the news you wanted to hear when your homes were under construction…I’m finishing ahead of schedule.”

Katherine laughed with the rest of the crowd. Nick was a natural up there, no matter how he deprecated his public-speaking skills. She listened as he quipped his way through the shortest “thanks for the recognition” speech in history, and knew that no one would soon forget that Nick Martinelli of Martinelli Construction had set them laughing, or that he viewed his business as part of the community.

After publicity shots were taken of the speakers, Katherine floated in Nick’s arms once again.

“This is the best part,” she said as she stroked his back.

“This is only the appetizer, darlin’,” whispered Nick. “It could be that the best is yet to come.”

She glanced up quickly to see the question in his eyes. Eyes filled with desire, shining with heat…and focused totally on her. With heart racing, she nodded.
